Mark started a few minutes before me which was ok since we expected I would be a bit faster. I neglected to see a large drop and filled the boat with water. Then had to stop and empty it. Caught Mark at the Eggleston bridge as he waited a few minutes for me. We stuck mostly together the rest of the way. I did empty some water again shortly before the takeout.

This was my first time on the section from Eggleston to Pembroke. I've now gone from dam (Claytor) to dam (Bluestone).

Water was nice. The drops were bigger than I remember. We saw a young bald eagle but not quick enough to get a picture.
9 AM

Portage race 23:46 intensity: (4:06 @1) + (14:34 @2) + (2:24 @3) + (2:42 @4) 1.05 mi (22:38 / mi) +133ft 20:13 / mi

Carried our boats to the outfitter so we could lock them up in a safer location. This is the farthest I have carried my boat. Didn't think about how annoying it was going to be until I got 100 yards.

Orienteering race 2:24:39 intensity: (49:59 @1) + (1:24:07 @2) + (10:10 @3) + (23 @4) 9.69 mi (14:56 / mi) +2844ft 11:41 / mi

Trek from Outfitter up Cascades to Mountain Lake. Left the outfitter just ahead of schedule

We tried to cut up the mountain after Cascades but we were following the wrong trail for too long and ended up wasting a bunch of time just to take the long way anyway. Lost maybe 30 minutes but still a bit ahead of schedule at the top.
11 AM

Mountain Biking race 1:12:09 intensity: (15:14 @1) + (53:41 @2) + (3:14 @3) 7.53 mi (6.3 mph) +1206ft
ahr:124 max:148 shoes: Viathon M1 GX

MTBO at Mountain Lake.
A loop around the conservancy. The points allowed for some navigational choices but we mostly chose the more adventurous options despite which one was faster.

We left our packs at the TA.
1 PM

Road Biking race 58:37 intensity: (29:10 @1) + (25:46 @2) + (3:41 @3) 11.21 mi (11.5 mph) +697ft

Ride down Mountain Lake.
Had originally planned to visit both Covered Bridges but Mark showed me another road I hadn't ever taken instead (Lucas Road).

We stopped at Newport Grocery to fill water before Pandapas.

When we turned to climb up 460 we saw that the left lane was closed as the pavement was still drying, but mostly dry. We realized riding the shoulder would be riskier now and that there was no reason not to ride on the closed lane so we had the lane entirely to ourselves for the whole climb. Pretty lucky.

Started and finished right on schedule.
2 PM

Mountain Biking race 2:24:52 intensity: (45:28 @1) + (1:31:00 @2) + (8:24 @3) 14.67 mi (6.1 mph) +2226ft
ahr:123 max:152 shoes: Viathon M1 GX

MTBO at Pandapas.
We ended up going counterclockwise which was much better. The distance was more than I had thought it was going to be and it took us a little longer than planned. Most of the extra time was spent fixing a leak in Mark's tire.

Lots of elevation on our tired legs. We were starting to feel it towards the end.

Lost 30 minutes to the schedule but had 30 minutes to spare assuming we could do the orienteering in 2 hours :-/
4 PM

Orienteering race 2:49:20 intensity: (2:32:56 @1) + (15:16 @2) + (1:03 @3) + (5 @4) 8.1 mi (20:54 / mi) +1635ft 17:33 / mi
ahr:105 max:162 shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

Orienteering Course
We realized that I had definitely designed more than we could handle in a reasonable amount of time. We dropped two of the controls that were pretty unnecessary and moved us in the opposite direction that we needed to go. I think the adjustments were actually for the best.

It started getting hot on this section and we started with a big climb. Most of our traveling was off-trail. Our pace was slow throughout and we soon realized we were going to be over our 2-hour goal. It eventually made its way up to almost 3 hours. Checked out some nice terrain, new trails, and new property!
7 PM

Road Running race 24:12 intensity: (7:50 @1) + (16:19 @2) + (3 @3) 2.91 mi (8:19 / mi)
ahr:124 max:140 shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

(Downhill) Road Run back to the start (our cars).
Mark put down a strong pace. I think it was even a little faster. I sucked it up and stuck with him.

When we finished we jumped in the river to cool off.

Shaking out the legs. Knees were a bit sore and this helped a lot. Pace was comfortable and easy.

Z's birthday run. 8 years old and still pounding out hard 10 milers.

Weather was beautiful. 80 in the sun but 70 in the forest and still low humidity. Dogs were fine. We still made several stops at the pond.

Pace was very strong (hard effort) especially when accounting for missed mileage on the Garmin and stopped time for the dogs.

Legs were starting to get tired on the last mile.
