West Point long - M21E
Well that was exhausting! But felt great to get back on maps this weekend and race.
Started off pretty steady to 1, my goals were to really plan today and take time to do that at each control. I made a good plan to #2 but between struggling to read the contours under the dark green on the map and to see anything at all in the dark green (short people probs) I was super confused. I ended up stopping too early and then going what looks like within a few meters of the control from my GPS, and relocating before coming back to find it. Frustrating to make a large mistake like that but I was able to put it behind me really well and focus up.
Had a good route in the first long leg, and then probably should have taken the large trail route to 7 for a physical and mental break from being pushed around and drained of energy from the underbrush. The rest of the course was pretty clean, just a few quick bobbles in the circle being a bit too high on the hillside. Was with Keegan and Eric for a while and tried to hang on as long as I could taking micro routechoices, but couldn’t keep up after control 17. Dragging my feet for the last few controls but there was some nice terrain near the end that I enjoyed.
Totally pooched by the end but aside from the ~8mins (?) lost, I’m pretty happy with the rest of this course and my concentration throughout.
Great weekend of some rust-busting racing!

West Point Middle - M21E
Raced up with the bois today. Happy with how this went considering I haven’t raced in ages or been in terrain that’s this challenging in a long time.
Never felt like I got into the top physical or technical gear, but I’ll take it.
I let the course build as I got into the map and terrain. Focus on looking up and strong compass.
Low to the cliff on #1 but recovered quickly. Made a small parallel error to 7, just a bit off on my compass but everything was matching. Lost probably 1.5 mins ish.
Loop from 8-11 was careful navigating and small hesitation on 12.
Then another 30s at 16, was reading ahead and didn’t read the control circle carefully enough.
Rest was pretty clean. Slow on the two uphill legs but then was able to pick it up into the finish!
Good stuff.

Well, that was not great.
Was happy not to get trapped at the start, then the course went into the forest which I wasn’t really expecting. Tried to switch my brain into “forest mode” but just couldn’t adjust to the scale. Overshot 5 and had to loop back, maybe lost 1minute, and then lost 3.5 minutes on 6. Plan wasn’t super strong and ended up overshooting the control, relocating a few times and visiting many rocks in the area until I found my control kind of hidden low to the ground. Urg.
The next leg was a long leg so I used it to refocus on planning ahead to get the mistake out of my mind. The rest of the course was super clean, was reading ahead well and pushing hard. The uphill to 17 was where I ran out of juice, but managed to push to the end.
Frustrating mistakes out there but lots to learn from it. Glad to see that the fitness and speed are coming together.
Not really much pain in shin while running but tender to touch.

Walked around Highland Falls NY upon arrival, didn’t want to beat up my shin any more than I had to before race weekend. Excited!

My good shin (left) decided to flare up?? Doesn’t feel exactly the same as my bad shin (which is a-ok right now). It felt fine on the grass. Biking the next two days before West Point.
