Paved Run 20:00 [2]

A short jaunt with Kate.

Weirdly, my left outer knee was achey afterward.

Orienteering race 1:25:08 [4]

A 90-minute score-o in rugged terrain, a 1:10k map, varied point values, a hefty 20-point per-minute late penalty, and on-the-clock planning time. I've never done a score-o quite like this. And I had a lot of fun!

Spent about 3.5 minutes planning, which was completely worth it. I was able to prioritize the high-point string across the top of the map (130, 120, 126, 128) and see which low-pointers I wouldn't bother with.

One real mistake coming out of 114 to go to 115. A 90 degree error thanks to an enticing trail. Re-oriented and corrected soon enough.

I should've been able to pick up #102 on the way back from 128. I tried to go straight for it, and looking at the map now, it would have been better for me to get out to the trail, then go back in. But I missed it while wandering through thick trees in a flattish area (not my forté), and was so nervous about time, that I didn't go back in to get it, even when I found the fenced area that was a sure attackpoint. Argh!

My wheels fell off a bit going to #124. I've had trouble in this area in the past. For some reason, I had a hard time telling what side of the hill I was on. Probably because time was running out and I was cracking under pressure a bit. I was worrying that I had severely overshot. I finally bailed to the top of the hill, and then quickly reshot and found it. Just a classic case of needed to bail and re-shoot sooner.

I then tore in to the finish with 5 minutes to spare, which is too much time to spare. I think nabbing 118 was viable, but the 20-point penalty made me squeamish. I was forgetting that these checkpoints were actually worth a lot more points than usual for a COC score-o!

Anyhoo. Wanderings and missed opportunities aside, I really enjoyed running around on this damp day. Went straight through marshes. Saw a mouse. Took in a view. Exfoliated myself with trees. Saw people which has an extra excitement in a score-o. Got to run fast for short bursts through the forest. Saw big cool rock stuff. Just a fun day running around a forest with friends.
