Indian Creek Fifties trail race - I did the 55km. Not having trained for it at all, and having been sick for the past 2 weeks, I was not expecting to do very well.
Ended up winning it (1st women's overall). Maybe not training is the secret...
Went out hard / fast. Ran with new trail buddy Jennifer for the first two hours, then we parted ways. The day got pretty hot (low 80s), and the trail was half exposed / half forested, but I drank upwards of 4L / stayed plenty hydrated. I actually liked the trail system a lot - super fast, rolling. Pike National Forest just W of Sedalia.
Got two MAJOR, major charlie horses (both on upper insides of thighs) around the 25 mile mark... had me walking like a cowboy on uphill stretches. I powered thru it determined not to let it get me down. Moderate relief on the downhill stretches, although most of the last 10 miles of this race are uphill.
Great organization and great volunteers - I would do this one again. And incidentally, the most beautiful moonset I've ever seen. Left the house at 5:00am, when it was still high in the sky and very very full.
