Big day in the Sangre de Cristos.
http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/2868157927Camped at the not yet opened (=empty...perfect!) Hayden Creek Campground. Went running from there in the early morning. Rainbow trail, which stays low (good for early season stuff) and parallels the range on the entire eastern slope.
Left the campground at 8:30 am (slow start... it was 20 degrees in my tent that morning, what can I say....) headed north on the trail.
My plan was for 30 miles, but also to make it to Bear Creek. At mile 15.5, I was still 2 miles from Bear Creek. Called the top of a small rise, with limestone, juniper, and pinon pine, an excellent turn around. Filled up at Howard Creek on the way back.
Ate: five or small fake meat nuggets, 2 bars, some pretzels, PB crackers, 1 apple sauce squeezie, 1 other fruit squeezie (apricot, pumpkin, and apple) that nearly made me puke (seriously, it took me 5 mins to get all of 100 cals down... and each time it went in my mouth... bleh). Drank 4 full L.
So yeah, the food and water sitch was okay. The sun was a little too much... even though I weaved in and out of the forest for the full 31 miles, the 8pm hour caught me with a pretty bad headache - sun induced.
Foot felt marginally better. MRI confirmed: no foreign bodies in there. Still swollen.
Shoes: just okay... turns out I warped the insoles when I put them near my space heater a few weeks ago. Boops.
Make it back to the campground before 4pm. ENough time to get several hours of work done on a manuscript at the picnic table. Spent last night doing the same, too.
Productive! And fun. The Sangres are just incredible...
