Today.... the now "annual" Cow Creek Trailhead (Estes... McGraw Ranch) to Pingree Park (CSU's Mtn Research Campus) and back... about 35 miles and 10k gain. First ran on 8/26/2017 (which will always be a sentimental outing for me... that was the day which, after the run, I placed the call to Don Feltner from a Thai restaurant in Estes, and signed up for flight lessons), and then again on 7/15/2018.

(a) I am not nearly in the high mileage conditioning that I have been in prior to years, and (b) injuries really got to me. My hip has been pretty sore (recovering from slight dislocation) since my accident, and it hurt for the duration. Second injury was from me jumping off the floats of a Cessna Grand Caravan up at KCYS 3 days ago, and jamming my ankle upon landing. That hurt for the duration.
But I was 100% determined to do it. Up at 3:25am, departing Andrew's by 3:40am. On the trail and running at 5:15am. Headlamp on (a little spooky in those dark woods) for the first 75 mins. All pretty swell on the first half, even if SUPER cold... filled up at my favorite spot (clean, clear, untreated). After an encounter with two bull moose that sent me skirting around Stormy Pass up and off trail, I crossed the Pass the first time at 8:57am. The winds were absolutely brutal (out of the west... sustained probably 45-50 mph). I rushed to treelike as fast as possible.
Thought about turning around on numerous occasions... glad I didn't. Motivated to continue by several things....persistence almost always pays off.
Made it to the Trailhead / Pingree @ 10:23am (mile 17.5), finally seeing other Homos for the first time today. Immediate turn around, and now for the 2nd half. Long climb back to the Pass... had to ration water, which wasn't comfortable. I was also super thirsty from the winds. But at least the air finally warmed up. 2nd crossing of the Pass at 12:23pm, along with my last sip of water.
On descent, filled up again at the same clear creek, then down. Into North Fork (of the Big Thompson) drainage, my body started to hurt all over, and that continued for the rest of the day. Toes, knees, hips, ankles, shoulders, neck... pretty badly. Just stuck with it at that point, oh well.
The return, like the first half, has four climbs and descents. I was feeling like burnt toast by climb #2 or #3 on the return. My downhills were slow, and I even walked a few of the flats. But, who's counting.... except me...
Was very happy to reach the 4th and final climb out of the magnificent canyon (West Creek) where I rediscovered Sticta wiegelii (see 2016 entry) after 50 years of report in Colorado. Still need to publish that! I spent quite a bit of time lichenizing / searching rocks for more, but didn't find a single thallus.
Drank: 4.5L (as before, could have had more), and didn't eat a ton (1 PBJ, 5 chick'n nuggets, some gummies, and 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast.. that's it... stomach was a little upset in parts/didn't want more).
Finished quite a bit later than my prior two outings (9:30, 9:40, now 10:30), only part of which related to the moose encounter, injuries, and and the lichenizing.

Until next year? ... maybe.
