Running (outdoors) hills 58:39 [4] 5.44 mi (10:47 / mi)
ahr:165 max:186

Not my best workout. It's been a rough couple weeks in terms of running - I was on vacation, then out of town for a long weekend, and in between very busy with work. I haven't had a lot of quality running, or any kind of running. Today I was getting over an illness and despite a rest day yesterday my legs were still stiff and tight from workouts earlier in the week. It would have been easy to skip this workout - I didn't get going until about 8:30 p.m. and it was raining slightly - but I toughed it out.

I ran from my apartment to Cat Hill, did six repeats up and down the hill, and then ran home. My pace was nothing exciting. In fact it was slower than the only other time I've done this workout - but that first time I took breaks between some of the hills, and this time I took no breaks. Mostly, I'm just glad I did this run. It would have been easy to stay at home, or to go to the gym and use the elliptical or slog through three easy miles on the treadmill. Instead - despite the limited energy at my disposal - I pushed myself to do a quality workout. Go me.

Jackrabbit workout 52:25 [4] 5.05 mi (10:23 / mi)
ahr:175 max:186

I feel like I botched this run. It was meant to be mostly tempo, with periods of "surge", followed by tempo and then recovery. I went out much too fast on the first tempo (my pace in the first 0.9 miles was 9:10 min/mile, when it should have been more like 9:50-10:10). I was able to pick it up a bit more for the surge at first, but then sputtered out after the first tenth of a mile and spent nearly a full mile recovering. My second tempo was much closer to where it should have been (lap function on Garmin was being weird, but it looks like I was averaging just above a ten-minute mile) an I was able to do a decent pickup for the surge. After the second recovery, I was meant to do another 0.9 miles or so at tempo, but my pace was definitely slower this time around.

Looking at my splits, such as I can piece them together, I feel better about the run. I definitely started out too fast, but I did well in the second part of the run, and I showed good spirit in trying to get a third tempo run in. The average pace is slower than most of my jackrabbit workouts have been, but that's largely because of the uneven nature of the run and the slowness of my recovery jogs.
