Strength Training 10:00 [3]

Running 31:18 [3]

From home to end of grassy path along Hudson River took exactly 20 minutes (last time Aleksey and I ran this, our time was 23 minutes, I think). Then ran back to the lighthouse and stopped to stretch.

Running 6:00 [2]

6 strides (about 20 seconds each) in the usual place from the tree to the lamp pole.

Running 10:05 [2]

Run home from the lighthouse. I tried to go slowly because we were running on pavement for the most part and my shins hurt.

Didn't have time to run today....

Strength Training 20:00 [3]

Running 8:20 [2]

Warm-up - running to the Fort Tryon park hill with Jamal .

Running 28:30 [4]

This was Jamal's last day in NYC, so I decided to make our run different today. I created two identical sheets of easy problems, one for each of us. (Simple stuff such as multiplying two-digit numbers, solving quadratic equations, and identifying the seventeenth letter of the alphabet.) We started at the bottom of a grassy hill. We would have five seconds to look at the problem, then run up the grassy hill, answer the problem, run back down, and rest for a minute or so. This training session was in no way organized - i did not take splits, did not time our rest, and in general did not stop/start my watch except for the very beginning and end of the session. But I did convince Jamal to do all eight hill runs with me so we left feeling accomplished :)

Running 29:46 [2]

Running by myself along the Jones Beach shore. The further out east I went, the less clothing people (mostly gay couples) were wearing. At first there were just men in speedos. Then came men in thongs. About fifteen minutes out, nobody bothered with clothes at all.

Running 32:40 [3]

Run with Aleksey in the evening. It had to be short because my knees and shins hurt. Plus, a delicious Pakistani dinner awaited us at Jamal's house. =)

Note
(rest day)

My right knee hurts. Also, my doctor stuck four needles in me today to get some blood and give me several vaccinations in preparation for my move to England. So today is a good day to rest.

Running 38:00 [2]

Ran with Jamal this morning. Sigh. I was getting mentally tired after circling around him for forty minutes, so I gave up and started walking alongside him. The distance that we covered (had I been running my own pace and going one way only instead of back and forth) should have taken only twenty minutes. Of course I covered more distance because of all the circling, but it really doesn't feel like a workout, even an easy one, when I have to keep turning around and heading back for Jamal. I told him to take a break tomorrow. He needs a break and I need to have a good run.

Strength Training 6:30 [3]

Crunches right after the run.

Running 43:22 [3]

Second run of the day in the dark with Aleksey - to the end of the grassy path along the Hudson and back. My knees and shins don't feel so good, but the run was nice.

Running 4:00 [2]

4 strides with Aleksey. Legs felt loose and light. Nice feeling.

Running 39:00 [2]

I ran with Jamal early in the morning along the Hudson River path. He is getting better at keeping his own pace and actually moving for the entire run. Before he would keep up with me and my comfortable (faster) pace for twenty minutes and then die, and then I'd have to circle him, whereas now I have to circle him the entire way. So this is progress for him, but not so good for me. At least I managed to convince him to do strides with me, although sadly he only agreed to do two.

Strength Training 6:10 [4]

Crunches.

Running 38:12 [1]

Running very slowly with Aleksey and Jamal. I really wanted to go faster because running that slow makes me feel like I'm dragging my legs and also makes my knees and ankles feel weird, but Jamal can't run faster than that....

Running 6:00 [3]

6 strides on the grass (23-25 seconds each)

Strength Training 8:00 [4]

Crunches.

Running 31:08 [1]

Went running with my brother in the evening. I wanted to run very slowly and try to read a map, but unfortunately we left after seven and it got dark quickly. I also wanted this to be a longer run, but Aleksey complained of a hurt knee and we headed home early.

Strength Training 30:00 [4]

Saturday Aug 20, 2005 #

Running 56:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Ran to Forest Park with goats and did four horse loops with Greg. Then ran home.

Thursday Aug 18, 2005 #

Running 38:05 [3]

Running the long loop around Forest Park with Boris. It was more humid today than yesterday...

Strength Training 20:00 [2]

Crunches and bench dips.

Wednesday Aug 17, 2005 #

Strength Training 16:00 [3]

Running 40:30 [3] 7.3 km (5:33 / km)

Run with Greg in Forest Park. It got dark by the end of it and I didn't realize we were going up the big hill he kept talking about until I was basically on top of it.

Orienteering 52:00 [4] 4.0 km (13:00 / km)

Went to Harriman with Greg and three Sergeis and did three short loops of varying distance (all about 1-1.5 km.) I felt good physically, despite the heat, but couldn't run as hard as I wanted to because of the rocks all around me. Also, perhaps because I haven't been to the woods in several weeks, I twisted both of my ankles at least twice during the course of the day. Luckily, none of these were very major, although I did usually curse and walk for a minute after each one. I also saw a snake. I'm not sure who was more surprised - we both jumped and moved away from each other.

Loop A : ~ 12.30 minutes
Loop B : ~ 20 minutes
Loop C : ~19.30 minutes

Map-hiking 35:00 [1]

Hiked to a mine and back to the cars, collecting controls on the way.

Saturday Aug 13, 2005 #

Strength Training 30:00 [3]

10 minutes crunches and some weights

Friday Aug 12, 2005 #

Running 33:24 [4]

Ran 16 minutes out along the Hudson pathway, then turned around. The way back took me 17:24 because I was getting dehydrated and because it was uphill.

Note

Today was supposed to be a rest day. Since I came home late last night and woke up early all week, I was very much sleep-deprived and decided to skip my morning run. I ended up sleeping very poorly and getting up early anyway. Then I felt like a zombie all day at work. So I decided to go for a run as soon as I came home. I didn't take Jamal or Aleksey along with me because I wanted to run at my own pace and I didn't feel like chatting with anybody. The result was that I finally had a decent run! I just wish it wasn't so humid in the evenings - the last five minutes were really tough.

Thursday Aug 11, 2005 #

Running 26:00 [2]

Running before, after, and in between hill repeats.

Running 4:00 [4]

4 hill repeats. Each one was faster than the previous. Started at 40.something, then second was 39.9, third one was 38.something, fourth one was 37.something. I felt good and would have done more, but needed to go home and shower so I could get to work on time.

Wednesday Aug 10, 2005 #

Running 35:23 [2]

Running with Jamal along the Hudson River. Aleksey woke up too late this morning so I told him he could catch up if he wanted to, but I was leaving. Aleksey didn't "catch up" to us until we were heading back, about four blocks away from home. I felt good today and grateful for the lack of humidity at 6AM. So nice!

Running 30:00 [3]

Another morning run today. Well, an attempt at one. I wish I could say I did a nice, steady run, but Jamal and Aleksey make that utterly impossible.

First we ran the big loop around Fort Tryon Park (18 minutes of going downhill and uphill). Then we stopped to stretch, because Jamal was dying. A moment later I saw a couple run by and decided to follow them (they struck my fancy because they were moving along quite quickly). Jamal fell back after three minutes and Aleksey and I had to go look for him (this included mostly running uphill). Finally, we found Jamal, did 4 strides (about 24 seconds each) on a grassy field, and jogged home.

Note

Jamal said he's considering getting life insurance, but he worries that the cost will be quite high considering his association with me and Aleksey :)

Strength Training 10:00 [3]

Crunches.

Running 32:00 [3]

Went for a run at 6AM this morning before work with Aleksey and Jamal. Aleksey would run ahead and listen to his MP3 player and I alternated between wanting to catch up to him and wanting to slow down or circle around for Jamal. It was tough being stuck in the middle of two people like that, one faster and one slower, and trying to stay with both. But I was SO happy about running when it wasn't so goddamn sunny and humid!!!

Running 25:00 [4]

Ran around in Fort Tryon Park (uphills and downhills)- 12:20.
Did 4 up-hill repeats - about 42/43 seconds each.
Then jogged up the hill to the entrance of the Park and walked home. I was glad I had water with me today and also glad that I decided not to do any distance running. My legs felt stiff from almost two weeks of not running and it was very hot out. After I came home, I didn't feel so good so I took a cold shower and lay around on the couch for a while. I complain about this everytime I go running in New York, but it's true - I don't handle humidity well.

Strength Training 7:25 [4]

7:25 minutes of crunches.
