Running 39:35 [2] 6.25 km (6:20 / km)
shoes: Asics 2008

An easy run with Boris around Norby track, then some small trails around Nåsten. It was raining hard most of the time, but this felt nice after the recent hot weather. My feet felt ok, although I am still worried about the blisters. Currently, I am uncertain about running the Ultralong Champs this Sunday. 16.8 km...

Strength Training 10:00 [1]

Core and pushups.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1] 20.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Asics 2008

Today we woke up, packed the tent, and made the long trek back to Nikkaluokta. This time, we did not take the boat, but we did stop for almost an hour near the lake to eat reindeer burgers. Good stuff.

Hiking 3:30:00 [1] 18.0 km (11:40 / km) +1790m 7:48 / km
shoes: Asics 2008

We set off down the trail to the mountains at 9:15 and returned back at around 19:30. The trek out to the top of Kebnekaise was simply spectacular. We started off along a rocky, dusty trail going down the valley. At one point we hit a stream that we couldn't hop across on stones and had to wade across barefoot. My feet went numb within the first two seconds, but hiking afterwards felt amazing. Too bad the feeling only lasted for a few minutes.

We spent a good chunk of time climbing uphill alongside a river, which we eventually had to cross, again barefoot. We stopped for a short snack break here, and then continued up a steep rocky reentrant. Part of the reentrant was completely covered in snow, but we didn't want to get our sneakers wet so early on in the hike, so we used hands and feet to climb on the big rockslide nearby instead. Then we ascended and descended one of the shorter mountains in the area to get to the saddle right before Kebnekaise. We passed a lot of people on our way here and were feeling good. We could see the top of Kebnekaise from this first peak and we were excited about reaching it. We were also happy to find many mountain streams where we could fill up our water bottles. Nothing beats drinking water straight off mountain ice!

The last long stretch, from the saddle up to the flattish area of Kebnekaise, passed relatively quickly. All we had to do was keep climbing upward on the rocks, concentrating in order to stay on the "trail." At this point, the trail was rather hard to distinguish from the rest of the mountain, the only difference being that the trail had red markings and slightly smaller rocks. Finally we made it up to the top, where the snow started. At first I tried to walk in other people's footprints, but eventually I gave up and my feet went numb. This was the only part of the hike when I really wished I had somewhat more suitable shoes. My sneakers had little grip and I kept slipping.

We dropped our bags about 200m from the top and put on an extra layer to make the final trek out to the pointy top of Kebnekaise. Getting up there required some effort because of the slippery footing, and I often had to claw at the snow with my hands to keep from sliding back down, but finally we made it! And then we could turn 360 degrees and see some incredible views. In a way, it was kind of scary to be up there because the peak is very sharp and sliding down the wrong side of it (down the steep glacier) could be very dangerous. But on the flip side, this sharpness just made it seem even more amazing. I've climbed a few other mountains before, but getting to the top of this one truly felt like being on top of the world. One source claims that it is possible to see 11% of Sweden from the top of Kebnekaise. I do not know if this is true, but we could certainly see a lot!!

After taking some photos, we slid back down the peak and ran through the snow to our bags. Then we started the long trek back home. For me, this was a lot harder than going up because it required intense concentration to avoid slipping on the rocks and falling over. I was grateful when we finally made it back home to our little tent. Once again, we had no trouble falling asleep.

Hiking 1:30:00 [1] 14.0 km (6:26 / km)
shoes: Asics 2008

Flew to Kiruna in the morning, took the bus to Nikkaluokta, then made the hike out to the Kebnekaise Fjällstation. Boris and I did this section in three parts - 6km hike, followed by 6km boat ride, followed by 8km hike. At first I felt a bit worried about the hike, because the backpack I have is too big for me and my feet were in bad shape after Oringen, but after patching up my feet and getting used to carrying around extra weight, I was optimistic. The weather was fantastic and seeing the mountains in the distance kept me moving forward. [We moved at about 12-13 min/km, but I will log only roughly half the time.]

Running 33:42 [2] 3.87 mi (8:42 / mi)
ahr:135 max:154 shoes: Asics 2008

Drove back to Uppsala today. Did an easy run with Sam, Ross, and Greg around Stadsskogen. Legs felt good! Amazing.

Note

Boris and I got a last-minute flight to Kiruna tomorrow morning, so we will be spending the next few days hiking and climbing Sweden's tallest mountain!! Life is good.

Note
(rest day)

I decided to skip today's chase event because of the blisters on my feet. One more run would have led to blood and I want to be able to run the ultralong champs next weekend.

Running 6:00 [2] 1.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaw 07

Running to the ski lift. Really excited about today!!

Orienteering 52:37 intensity: (32:37 @4) + (20:00 @5) 6.2 km (8:29 / km) +130m 7:41 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 07

EVENT: Oringen World Cup Middle distance
COURSE: Women's, 6.2 km, 130m climb, 14 controls
MAP: Hundfjället, 1:10,000, 5m contours
TERRAIN: The course was mainly in the open on top of the mountain, with lots of really technical contour detail and awesome visibility. The last part went steeply down the hillside.
MY RUN: I twisted my ankle during the 220m run to the start triangle and instead of stopping to really check my direction, I tried to keep limping in the direction of the first control. Mistake! The first control was basically a compass leg several contours down to a reentrant, and I ended up being too far right of the line and had to correct. This probably cost me about a minute. Then I orienteered very well from there up until the 8th control. I was spiking everything and making up time on others - I got way ahead of Kirsten (who I caught by #1) and caught up to Sabine (who passed me to #2 but then kept making mistakes). But then I did something really stupid. After navigating so well for so long, I let my guard down. I had barely run more than 10 seconds away from #7 when I saw Sabine stop ahead of me, looking uncertain. This made me stop and lose confidence. I figured we were too low and went farther and higher, but I found a control that wasn't mine. Then I went back down and found yet another control, again not mine. Then I bailed back in the direction of #7 and succeeded from there. This was a terrible mistake. If I had not paid attention to Sabine and just kept going in my direction, I would have been fine. [Several days have passed and I still can't forgive myself for this mistake. It was completely unnecessary and avoidable and it cost me 4.5 minutes. Argh!!!!!!]
RESULT: 47/57, Hausken won in 37:17
THOUGHTS: With a clean race (i.e. without that big mistake and with a cleaner #1) I would have been 38th and I would have gotten about 1000 world ranking points. (This seems more easily achievable in middle distance.)

Running 25:00 [2] 3.1 km (8:04 / km)
shoes: Green VJ Integrators

Run/Walk to the start with Sandra, Hillary, and Sabine. Tired, but looking forward to the course. Hoping it will be very technical!

Orienteering 1:42:45 [4] 10.8 km (9:31 / km) +555m 7:34 / km
shoes: Green VJ Integrators

EVENT: World Cup Long Distance
COURSE: Women's, 10.8 km, 555m climb, 25 controls, pairs start with butterfly loops
MAP: Närfjället, 1:15,000, 5m contours
TERRAIN: Top part of map open mountain side ending in very technical white woods (lots of contour detail!), then some bland white marshy woods and another steep mountain side.
MY RUN: I started with Kirsten Fairfax and we did a good job of navigating together to #1. For a while things were going well technically, although physically I was suffering. There was a lot of steep climb in the beginning of the course and the soft footing didn't make it any easier. I am not certain my route on the long leg to #12 was the best, because the cabins were taped off so I didn't go to the road as planned but ran alongside the tapes instead, but at least I found the control without getting lost. Then I almost skipped the second half of the second butterly because I was getting tired, but caught myself because I went too far off course. This still led to a ~4 minute mistake, but it is better than being DSQed! The rest of the course was mainly fine, but I was just slow and my feet started hurting because of blisters. At the end, Kirsten and I wound up running together again and it ended in a sprint finish (she won).
RESULT: 47/55, Hausken won in 72:41

Orienteering 15:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) 2.14 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaw 07

Sprint model event in the morning, after the team leaders meeting. Felt kind of tired, but really excited about the upcoming races!

Running 14:30 [2] 1.5 km (9:40 / km) +100m 7:15 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 07

Jog/walk to the sprint start. This was entirely through forest and marshes with a significant amount of climb - a tough warm-up!

Orienteering 19:46 [5] 2.6 km (7:36 / km) +85m 6:32 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 07

EVENT: World Cup Sprint
COURSE: Women's, 2.6 km, 85m climb, 16 controls
MAP: Högfjällshotellet, 1:5000, 2.5m contours
TERRAIN: Bottom half of the map was a steep open hillside ending in white woods, top half was cabins.
MY RUN: I took a good route to #1 and the next few controls were really easy (just straight running along the hillside), but made a mistake on #5. It was a downhill leg into the white forest and I knew it would be tricky, but unfortunately I chose a bad route, which cost me some time, and then had trouble attacking the control, which cost me a bit more time. (Possibly a minute lost in total.) I then ran the rest of the course almost perfectly, but I was quite tired and my time was not brilliant. In particular, I was very dehydrated (my own fault) and my throat hurt a lot because of the dry air. Will be more careful about this type of stuff in the next few days.
RESULT: 51/62, winner was Hausken in 14:16.

Running 6:25 [2] 0.68 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: Mudclaw 07

Cool-down jog with Jenny.

I meant to do the sprint model event this afternoon, but I forgot to bring my shoes, so I walked around the event center with Boris instead. To make myself feel better, I bought an expensive pair of Noname tights and beat Boris in biathlon shooting.

Orienteering 50:00 [2] 4.55 km (11:00 / km)
shoes: Green VJ Integrators

Training on another mountain map called Myrflodammen, this time along the side rather than on top. I felt a lot more confident with the contour features today.

Saturday Jul 19, 2008 #

Running 7:00 [3] 1.3 km (5:23 / km)
shoes: Mudclaw 07

We drove to Sälen today and then hurried over to the event center to register for the "training race." We had to run quickly to get to the ski lift in time.

Orienteering 1:00:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 5.45 km (11:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaw 07

Training race on top of a mountain - Sälfjället. I did most of a 7km course with Boris, stopping to check out features and in general taking it easy. This was really tough orienteering, but awesome to be out here!

Running 32:10 intensity: (26:10 @2) + (4:00 @3) + (2:00 @4) 3.79 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2008

Easy run around Stadsskogen. Legs felt much better today - still somewhat tired, but not like on Saturday, when I felt an overwhelming desire to stop and rest when jogging to the start. Towards the end, I did 4x30 second strides, with 1 minutes jogging in between. Felt fine.

Running 26:33 intensity: (13:00 @1) + (13:33 @2) 2.66 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:124 max:144 shoes: Asics 2008

Really easy running (with many breaks) while Boris and Peter did the DX Deluxe course. I spent the time looking at a course that Boris drew for me on the Oringen day 5 map.

Note

1. In the afternoon, Boris, Peter, and I went geocaching using my Garmin. This led to a nice hike around Stadsskogen and the successful location of a box of random stuff. Neat. Perhaps I should try doing this on some of my future easy runs.

2. The distances for my upcoming orienteering races are available:
Oringen: sprint, long (10.8 km), middle (6.2 km), chase (7.9 km)
Swedish Ultralong Champs: 16.5 km
US Champs: Day 1 (7.7 km, 235m climb), Day 2 (11 km, 220m climb)

I am really excited!!!

Running 6:58 [1] 0.71 mi (9:49 / mi)
ahr:114 max:133 shoes: Green VJ Integrators

Very slow jogging (and some walking, not included) with Boris and Peter to the start. Legs really fatigued...

Orienteering 1:13:48 [4] 7.9 km (9:21 / km)
ahr:160 max:174 shoes: Green VJ Integrators

EVENT: Eskilstuna Weekend Long distance
COURSE: D21L, 7.9 km, 18 controls
MAP: Vilstaskogen, 1:15,000, 2.5m contours
TERRAIN: Top part of the map runnable, bottome half junky woods - cut-down areas, less contour detail, rockier, greener. Lots of paths.
MY RUN: Today's course was very good training for me, as a lot of legs had 2-3 possible route choices. I did not always choose the best ones, which cost me some time, but it was fun to have so much decision-making! Very tired towards the end of the course - resorted to walking more often.
RESULT: 19/23 finishers on D21L. Definitely lost some significant time on route choice and some mistakes, but overall a good effort.

Friday Jul 11, 2008 #

Running 10:27 [2] 1.16 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Green VJ Integrators

Slow warm-up. Despite taking it easy the past few days, my legs still felt kind of heavy.

Orienteering 34:07 [4] 4.0 km (8:32 / km)
shoes: Green VJ Integrators

EVENT: Eskilstuna Weekend middle distance race.
COURSE: D21L, 4 km, 11 controls
MAP: Vilstaskogen, 1:10,000, 2.5m contours
TERRAIN: Top part of the map (used for today's course) is mainly very runnable white forest with lots of contour detail. Footing tough as usual, but otherwise very fast woods.
MY RUN: I started off feeling somewhat hesitant, getting used to 2.5m contours again after Gothenburg. My confidence level and comfort with the terrain were good, but I still have a lot of work to do when it comes to actually finding the control once in the circle. I lost time in the control circle on 5/11 controls and lost time due to veering off the straight line on two of the other controls. I fixed all mistakes reasonably quickly, so some of these were 15-20 seconds worth and the biggest time loss was about 70 seconds. This is still a lot, but an improvement nonetheless, seeing as I would always make at least one 3+ minute mistake in Swedish middles prior to this summer.
RESULTS: 21/26 in D21L. Running D21L when there is also a D21 can be somewhat demoralizing - there were lots of really good women running my course! Emma Dahlstedt, Lena Eliasson, and Elin Skantze were top three in about ~25 minutes.

Thursday Jul 10, 2008 #

Note

My Swedish ranking is on the rise. My excellent middle distance race was unfortunately not ranked but the other two races were, so I am now ranked 370th in Sweden, having moved up 46 places in one weekend. Progress is so easy at first! :)

Running 49:08 [2] 5.08 mi (9:40 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2008

Easy run: Nåsten indistinct trails, then half of the testbana course, then through the fields in the valley, then on gravel/road the rest of the way. I felt sluggish and tired most of the time, so did a few drills and strides at the end, in the shade.

Easy run - three loops around Norby lit track. I felt like I was getting slower each time, but the splits were 13:34, 13:35, 13:34. My legs still feel heavy and tired, so it'll be another easy day tomorrow.

Orienteering 1:00:55 [4] 5.0 km (12:11 / km)
ahr:153 max:165 shoes: Green VJ Integrators

JWOC ''long'' distance spectator race, on Partille-Gunnilse. This race was during the actual JWOC race, but we ran on a different part of the map, with the same finish area. My legs felt really tired after yesterday because I really legged it around the second half of the course, so today's race was mediocre. I didn't make any ridiculous mistakes, so my routes look ok, but I did stupid things in the control circle and was in general running quite slowly, as my average HR shows. Not a very impressive result today, 27th out of 43 on D21. Results here: http://www.frolundaol.se/Arr/JVM2008/resultatlista...

Running 10:06 [2] 1.03 mi (9:48 / mi)
ahr:157 shoes: Green VJ Integrators

Running to the start and then around.

Orienteering 37:53 [4] 3.7 km (10:14 / km)
ahr:160 shoes: Green VJ Integrators

Another JWOC spectator race - middle distance on Skatås. I spiked the first control, but had some trouble on #2, a short leg along the side of a slope, which cost me 3 minutes. Then on #4, I lost 45 seconds in the control circle looking for the dot knoll. I recognized two other distinct features in the circle, but finding the control itself proved difficult... After this, I ran with other girls for most of the race. At first they distracted me, but then I got used to it and we had some nice head-to-head racing. It's really fun to run fast through the forest leading a group of Swedes for a change!
RESULT: 10th out of 37 in D21. I could have been 2nd with a clean run, because I figure I lost about 4.5+ minutes out there in total, but this result is still quite decent for me. Results here: http://www.boquist.net/uven/publikjvm/resultat.htm...

Running 16:32 [2] 1.75 mi (9:27 / mi)

Orienteering 33:30 [4] 3.0 km (11:10 / km) +145m 9:00 / km
ahr:165 max:180 shoes: Green VJ Integrators

The spectator race today was a regular Swedish ranking middle distance event, so I was surprised to learn that the D21 course was the actual JWOC women's A final course. I was feeling tired from another 6+ hours spectating, but I managed to concentrate well and fixed all of my small zigs before they became big mistakes. The terrain was very technical, but also incredibly pretty. My time was good enough for 13th place out of 56 starters on D21, my best middle distance result ever in Sweden. And I would have been 18th in the JWOC A final. That's pretty cool. Since I am only about a year off from being a junior, I feel it's still reasonable to compare my times with theirs. I think that with an absolutely flawless race I might have broken 30 minutes, but I am not at that level yet.

shoes: Mudclaw 07

Long run on small trails (some very indistinct) through Skatås (1:10) and then on a map called Getryggen (1:15). Tough running in places - a long gravel hill, some steep rocky hills, and even some stone steps when climbing past some huge cliffs. The lakes were gorgeous - too bad I didn't have time for a swim. Arches hurt and I felt very dehydrated after about 50 minutes out. It's definitely tough training in the late afternoon after spending several hours in the sun spectating, but I'm really glad I did this. It was very pretty out in the forest and I ran up all of the hills.

Orienteering 1:12:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @2) + (12:00 @3) 4.5 km (16:00 / km)
shoes: Green VJ Integrators

JWOC middle distance model event. For the first two technical controls, nothing made sense. This was a really hilly map and my sense of distance and height isn't great. I have trouble judging how many meters I've climbed or dropped, and even more trouble keeping a bearing through rocky, junky terrain. Today's training was really physical, but I also think it was good for me. I orienteered better after the first few controls, although I did still have to hesitate very often and there was no flow whatsoever. Hopefully I got the worst of the mistakes out of the way today and now that I have an idea of what this terrain is like, the next few days will be better.

Running 32:10 [2] 3.57 mi (9:01 / mi)

Easy run at 9:30 PM around the base. This should be the last time I run around here, which is good because the gravel paths hurt my knees. Otherwise, felt great!
