(rest day)

Boris' birthday!

Strength Training 18:00 [1]

Some hip stuff. Then I started doing one-legged squats, but the chair was badly balanced on the carpet and the chinchilla startled me, so I fell backwards and the chair fell sideways (at least I didn't fall on it). Hurt my tailbone though. :(

Strength Training 25:00 [1]

More hip strength, then 3x8 one-legged squats on each side. This doesn't seem to bother my knee significantly, and it makes my legs tired, so that's good. I like this kind of tiredness.

Note

Was going to go climbing today, but bad blisters from skiing won't let me put on the tight-fitting rock shoes. Maybe in a few days...

XC skiing 1:40:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (1:10:00 @2)

Borrowed Kseniya's skate skis and poles, and had an awesome time! This felt so much more natural than classic! And I could actually glide up some of the hills without using my arms, which was amazing and gave my triceps a much-needed break.

XC skiing 1:20:00 intensity: (50:00 @1) + (30:00 @2)

More classic skiing, same trails as yesterday. My striding was a lot better on the flats (especially after going back and forth on the stadium practicing), but uphills are still impossible. Beautiful day again!

XC skiing 2:00:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (1:00:00 @2)

Skiing with Boris at the Olympic Center at Lake Placid. The new skis were great - so much better than crappy rentals. My double poling was relatively good, but I've basically forgotten how to stride, so I did a lot of walking up the steeper hills (and the gradual hills too...). It was a gorgeous day - sunny, right around 0C, nice tracks, beautiful view of Whiteface Mt at the finish.

Strength Training 25:00 [1]

Note

After lunch, we all went to the Olympic bobsled course and Boris and I took a ride. Roughly .5 mile in 48 seconds, really fun!

Wednesday Dec 23, 2009 #

Note

Boris and I drove up to Lake Placid today to join my family (who arrived yesterday) for a short winter vacation. I decided to skip skiing today because (a) my heel blisters still hurt, (b) I didn't want to ski in rental boots again. But I did join everyone for the other activities. In particular, I briefly tested swimming in the hotel pool, and the achilles bursitis seems to be better! Kicking still feels weird, but it no longer hurts (or at least not after ten seconds). I'll have to try a swimming session once I'm back in New Haven. :)

In the evening, Boris and I walked to a local ski store and bought me some skis (classic), boots, poles, and bindings. I really do have the best boyfriend in the world.

Note

Legs and hips still sore.

Monday Dec 21, 2009 #

Note

Legs and hips really sore from exercises yesterday.

XC skiing 45:00 [1]

Skiing at Winding Trails in Farmington, CT. This sucked. The rental boots gave me horrible heel blisters, and there was only about 100 meters of proper tracks - the rest was totally destroyed. :(

Wall Climbing 30:00 [1]

Finished my last exam today at 6:30 PM, and went climbing from roughly 7:30-9:30. Felt tired and not as motivated as last week. Need sleep.

Sunday Dec 13, 2009 #

Cross-Training (stepper) 40:00 intensity: (35:00 @1) + (5:00 @2)

Stepper, with the last 5 minutes at level 8!!

Strength Training 30:00 [1]

Had to cut out a lot of stuff because my knee hurt really sharply when doing leg extensions. It was almost as bad as the first time it happened in Ansonia, when the pain started. Weird. I did the exact same weight and number of reps last week and the knee was fine then.

Running 7:00 [2]

Wanted to do an easy run with Boris at West Rock, but discovered upon arrival that everything was covered in snow and ice. We had just sneakers with us, so I started the run warily, and then decided to turn back after a few minutes because I was too worried about falling.

Wall Climbing 30:00 [1]

Climbing at Prime Climb with Boris, three hours total. It was awesome! First we did some of the regular vertical climbs:
5.5 green - easy
5.6 blue - one tough incline spot, but otherwise ok
5.6 yellow - easy
5.7 orange - really tough incline part, didn't make it all the way to the top because too tired after that maneuver. Maybe next time.
5.6 red - struggled a bit at the end with the incline, but great otherwise
5.7 yellow - basically a series of holds all in a row, so the last half was really tough - was stuck.
"fun" climb orange - got 1/3 of the way up, then got stuck. hard!
Then some bouldering climbs:
blue route - easy!
orange route - can't get the last two handholds
yellow/black tape - did a hook with my left foot for the first time ever!, but then couldn't hang on one arm - not strong enough?
purple - incline part in the beginning tough. needs more work

Running 29:20 [3] 5.51 km (5:19 / km)

Easy run with Boris and Marie, in the dark at West Rock. I stopped before the knee pain got too bad.

Cross-Training (stepper) 40:00 [1]

Some measure theory, then some Harriman maps.

Strength Training 42:00 [1]
shoes: Asics Cumulus 11 (Nov 2009)

Usual stuff - moved up the weights for the leg extension exercise. Towards the end, I chatted with a guy from the UK for a bit, and this made me realize that in, some ways, I miss my life at Oxford. Strange, but true.

Wall Climbing 15:00 [1]

Wall climbing at the CT rock gym in New Haven, testing out the new shoes Boris got me for my birthday. ! I'm hoping to start going climbing regularly next term, so these will come in handy.

Running 42:21 intensity: (22:21 @2) + (20:00 @3) 7.36 km (5:45 / km)

East Rock headlamp run with Marie and Mike. Great to have company! Left knee gradually got worse, but legs felt awesome!
