| (rest day) | ||
| I have blisters from yesterday and hurt ankles (I twisted them a lot the last few days), so a day off was a good idea. I spent most of it spectating the relays and then driving back to Uppsala. | ||

| EVENT: Norsk O-festval 2008 World Cup
COURSE: Long distance, chase start, 10.5 km, "515 m climb", 31 controls MAP: Bukkesti and Slettåsen, 1:10,000, 5m contours TERRAIN: Same as yesterday, except we went into some of the green areas today with lower visibility and slower running. MY RUN: I started 15 seconds after a Danish girl and I ran a bit faster at the beginning to catch up to her. Even before I got to the start triangle (20 meters above the start arena), I saw that the best route to #1 was to go right back down the taped route to a flattish trail, but I didn't actually do this because I wasn't sure if this was allowed and I didn't want to risk disqualification. So I followed the Danish girl instead. The route we took was definitely slower, as it involved an extra 25-30 meters climb through blueberry bushes instead of nice trail and road running, but at least I know that only a few girls took the optimal trail route, so I was in good company. The Danish girl was slightly stronger than me, but she wasn't that good at navigating and I passed her on the way to #3. Then came the butterfly loop, where I was rather slow (hesitating at each control to make sure I was going to the right next control). And then came the map turnover, with some longer legs with plenty of climb. I made my biggest mistake (a few minutes, probably) on #19, where I had to drop down the side of a hill to a small reentrant among cliffs and everything was so steep and difficult to see that I ran about for a bit looking for a way to get down and then trying to get across the hillside. A few controls later, the German girl passed me. (She must have been having a pretty bad race, because she started 2-3 minutes ahead of me in the chase.) I couldn't keep up with her because I was way too tired, so I just pushed on at my slow pace. By this point, I felt like I was walking half of the time. I stopped at the spectator control to get my third map and to drink two cups, then headed off to finish the last loop. Slow and tired does not even begin to describe how I was feeling on those last few legs, but at least I finished. RESULTS: 39/40. I got a bad world ranking score for this (767), but at least I now have 2 World Cup points...

| EVENT: Norsk O-festival 2008 World Cup
COURSE: Middle distance, 4.7 km, "280 m climb," 18 controls MAP: Bukkesti, 1:10,000, 5m contours TERRAIN: Really steep hills, with tall blueberry bushes everywhere, green reentrants, and good visibility on the hilltops. Really, REALLY tough running. MY RUN: First control was an easy spike, but it was also 40m straight up from the start arena. It just got harder from there. #2 was fine, although it took me longer to cut out to the trail than it should have. Then #3 was a long leg where I was a bit indecisive about the route and finally decided to go with the straighter option. The climbing over the blueberry hills made me tired and hence stupid, so I started searching for the control one hill too early. This ended up being a big (i.e. 15+ minute) mistake, after which I was dead tired from doing lots of extra climbing up and down the same steep hillside in search of the control. Finally I found #7 and things made sense again. After this, I finished the rest of the course with no further (big) mishaps, but I was very VERY slow. Managed to get away from the New Zealand girl on the last few controls due to better navigation. RESULTS: 44/48 (44/45 not counting those who were disqualified)

| In the morning, Boris and I drove the rest of the way to Oslo, picked up Eric and Neil, and then headed over to the model event. I went really slowly, for the same reasons as yesterday, and felt much more comfortable with the terrain by the end. I even managed to find a control ahead of one of the Swedish runners. :) | ||

| The final bulletin for the Norwegian O Festival is now up on the website. The World Cup middle distance is 4.67 km, 280m climb and the long distance is 10.55 km, 515m climb, with 31 controls, a butterfly, a map-turnover, and a map exchange. Judging from the entry list, I am way out of my league, but it should be an awesome experience nonetheless. :) | ||

| Boris and I drove to Karlstad today to spend the night at Tom's house. We went out training at around 7:30 PM on one of the nearby maps. Really technical, physical, and cool. I walked quite a bit of the time so that I could look at the map more and to avoid tiring myself out. | ||

| Easy run along gravel paths in Nåsten and then some cutting through the forest to where Linne people were playing swamp football. It was fun to watch, but this bit of running wasn't good for my sneakers. After a few minutes, I took the same route back to the clubhouse. Awesome barbecue followed when everyone got back. | ||

| Run to Nåsten and then a bit on trails with Csaba, then some cutting through the woods down the hill to the valley and back home. Even though my average HR isn't that high, this felt like work. It's tough both physically and mentally to run on twisty, rocky trails with roots everywhere after getting used to flat, even ground in Oxford. | ||
