Running 54:00 [2] 7.7 km (7:01 / km)

Running around on sandy trails, and partly in terrain, testing out my new Vibram Five Finger shoes. This includes half an hour in the morning, then two more bouts of 12 minutes in the afternoon (first in the Vibram, then in sneakers). For the first half hour, the vibram felt absolutely great! Lightweight, grippy, and padded enough to protect me from sand and gravel. But the construction also has downsides - certain types of thorns can pass through the bottom of the shoe.

Strength Training 20:00 [3]

Orienteering 34:24 [2] 5.98 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: Asics Cumulus 11 (Nov 2009)

Easy training at University of Arizona campus, course designed by Boris. Fun to do this in the evening, but perhaps a bit too long (knee hurt for the second half).

Running 22:19 [3] 3.19 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Cumulus 11 (Nov 2009)

6 hill intervals up a sandy road (about 210 meters in total, maybe 15m climb?). Feet hurt, but the padded shoes and soft ground (no rocks) made it tolerable. Times were 1:12, 1:10, 1:07, 1:07, 1:05, 1:05. Quads were feeling tired on the last one, so I stopped. Knee was ok on the way up, but hurt if I tried to run back down, so I walked. Lots of rest. :)

Running 7:00 [2] 1.17 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Jog to the start.

Orienteering 1:28:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (18:00 @3) + (50:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) 8.0 km (11:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Anza Borrego B-meet, day 1. I was so excited to be running again, especially in this beautiful place, that I didn't force myself to read the map carefully, and of course therefore had quite some trouble on a few controls. Then my feet started hurting after about half of the course (lots of rocks and sand led to bad blisters), so I limped the last few controls. Totally worth it anyway - this is the most fun I've had running in a long time.

Running 4:30 [2] 0.78 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Jog to/from the start.

Orienteering 13:00 [2] 1.86 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Mudclaws (Aug 2009)

Model event. Everything made sense, and I felt fast (although slightly breathless).

Strength Training 20:00 [1]

More electric exercises - about the same level as last time (roughly a 2).

XC skiing 50:00 [2]

Drove to Farmington with Boris and two Yale skiiers and did a "race" around a man-made snow loop (about 750m?) at Winding Trails. There were no tracks for classic, so I borrowed a pair of rental skate skis and used my classic poles. Felt really, really slow - a combination of the snow, heavy rental skis, short poles, and hill. My arms got a good workout, though.
