shoes: Winter boots (Zamberlan)
Friday night adventure up the Sow of Atholl. Dreamt up this idea earlier in the week and thought that a Corbett on route to inverness was logistically possible if I left work early. So....
Set off along the track from Dalnaspidal and slightly daunted by the amount of snow - about knee high by the track, which then turned into between knee and waist high in the first fields. hmm. only in walking boots so I was slightly envious of the skiers who looked to have been up earlier. Got stuck above my waist in one drift. faff faff faff, plugged on and thankfully once out of the valley floor the S spur had been wind-swept by the Westerlys.
Plugged along the ridge to the top, a couple of slopes I was concerned about the depth of snow and pretty hard to judge aspect / gradient at night. Nice views down the trains / cars / lorries down the A9.
wind picked up on top so quick about turn and quick descent back to car.
two fellas in flourescent jackets seemed to be loitering around my car as I approached on my return, then it appeared there was a police car next to it, and these fellas were in fact coppers. I thought the chaps were just there checking on the other (appearing to be abandoned) cars. I started banging on about how it was a great night to be on the hill before they told me they'd been called out to check a flickering light on the glen. oops, they'd been there a while and bricking it when they indeed see a light on the hill, but were pretty relieved it was descending and they weren't going to have to go wading out through the snow. off they went!
I might have to re-think these Friday night adventures, as a lot of people also seemed to be concerned when I was up Ben Starav in April at about 10pm.
