This turned out to be an epic. We rode down Sligo Creek to the junction with the Northwest Branch. Then I suggested we could make a loop by going back on the Northwest Branch trail, but we'd have to carry the bikes for the rocky half-mile to Colesville Road. Everyone agreed, but when we got to the end of the paved part, the trail was closed. We started up it anyway, but it was badly washed out. It looked easier to cross the river and drag the bikes up the west bank towards Franklin. It wasn't exactly easy, with bikes. The rocks in the river were slippery, and I gave up trying to hop and just waded. The bank was steep, muddy and leaf-covered. We eventually came out of the woods through someone's back yard.
Only a week ago Glenn and I were on a bike ride in which we also got off the trail and came out to the road through someone's back yard, but in a completely different place. Weird habit. This time the homeowner was out front, and when we told him we had come from the other side of the river he thought we were nuts.
