Road running 40:00 [3] 4.7 mi (8:31 / mi)

GSFC perimeter road.

This time I measured the time. Still too fast for E pace.

Orienteering race 1:30:30 [3] *** 6.9 km (13:07 / km) +345m 10:30 / km

QOC Pohick Bay Red. Yesterday's run was still making itself felt, not painful, but enough to dampen enthusiasm for an all-out effort. So I jogged and walked, and enjoyed nearly perfect navigation. Course was technically pretty easy, and some controls had line of sight from a long way away. Minor trails sure were hard to spot. I was fine with the climb.

Road running race 48:48 [5] 10.0 km (4:53 / km)

Patuxent Trail 10K Race. Third place in M50-59. Didn't expect to place, being at the high end of the age group. Started off too fast, which was easy to do because of being caught up in a big crowd on a small trail. It started to thin out after about 2K, and by 4K I was in a good groove and starting to pass people, feeling strong on the little uphills. At 8K I passed the guy who would eventually nick me at the finish with a big sprint for 2nd in the age group (bad on me for not checking behind me in the field). Had one slip in the mud and narrowly missed slamming a tree. Shoes were Inov8 X-talon, which felt good but didn't do much in the deeper mud holes. Maybe x-c spikes would be better.

For a lot of runs I just guess at the time, but this time I measured it accurately (even though it looks like a round number). It's still too fast for E pace, which is supposed to be 9:07 for VDOT=46. This is odd, because once when I ran with a GPS watch, it claimed I was running too slowly, and I don't think my perception has changed in the intervening time. I'm having trouble reconciling this in my mind.

Final control placement for Greenbelt. Put out the water at the river crossings, plus the 3 controls on the river, plus the 11 white and yellow controls in the picnic loop, plus 2 controls in the trail network to the west. I somehow mis-packed one of the bags, so had the wrong e-punches, not matching the controls. Panic starts to set in as the clock is ticking. In the end, everything was in place by start time, and I had worked up a good sweat in the cold north wind.

Setting out controls for Greenbelt meet. Conditions deteriorating in the afternoon, glad to get out of there. Starting at the south end and working north, I had controls packed in bags in order of placement, so grab a bag, go out on a loop, back to the car. Parked in 4 places for easiest access, and the system worked well. Left the trailside controls for tomorrow.

GSFC Perimeter Road. Another 60+ day. Saw a butterfly flying overhead, orange and brown on the bottom, about 2.5" wingspan, some kind of fritillary. Tried to chase it, but lost it in some woods. Others have reported sulphurs, whites, a mourning cloak, and a question mark. Strange winter.
