Cycling 53:33 [2] 11.54 mi (4:38 / mi) +46m 4:35 / mi

At noon, 90 degrees or so, flat along the creek but one big hump getting back up and out of the valley. Seems like there was a headwind going downstream, and a tailwind coming back up. My arms are going to have to harden up if I'm going to do this more.

Road running race 22:34 [5] 3.1 mi (7:17 / mi) +55m 6:54 / mi
shoes: Fastwitch 9

Rockville Suds & Soles 5k. Disappointing performance. I expected to be in the range of 21 min, but instead my pace was actually slower than in the 10k three weeks ago. I have no idea why. I could tell I was slow almost from the beginning, but there was nothing more I could do.

Second in 60-69, more than 2 min behind Jim Hage, and as I've mentioned before, if he's in the race, he's going to finish ahead of me. The next 65-69 runner was my co-worker Bill Teng at 26:44. Bill complains about me the way I complain about Jim.

Lawyers Have Heart 10k. Second in 60-69. This is a big race, in downtown D.C, starting and ending under the Whitehurst Freeway by the waterfront. I ran it a few times in the '80s and '90s, but it was on a different course, from what I remember.

I was unable to get close enough to the start (I really don't like standing for a long time waiting for the gun), so I started with the 8-9 minute runners, and spent some time boxed in by various groups. According to the split analysis, that might have cost me about 20s. Notwithstanding, this was my fastest 10k in many years, and a whole minute faster than the last one a month ago. The shoes made a big difference.

Jon T. ran the 5k version, and we hung out waiting for the awards ceremony, which in the end, never happened, due to some problems with the results. We're both trying to get our 3 ranked races in before the end of June for a Washington-area ranking.

Have to go back to November 2012 to find a faster 10k than this.

Intervals at Sligo International track. 4x1000 with 600m jog. Times were 4:17, 4:17, 4:20, 4:19. The level of effort felt good. There were kids on recess, and they were all over the track.

Orienteering race 1:36:33 [4] 10.6 km (9:07 / km) +150m 8:30 / km
shoes: IceBug Olx 4

QOC Jug Bay Long Advanced. 33 controls and 4 mandatory beer stops (well, choice of beverage). Mass start at high noon for all courses. I followed Ted Good for most of the first 2 loops, occasionally getting ahead, then Matt Stout caught me on the last loop and we were together until he kicked it to the finish. Lots of fun as usual.

Back in Maryland. Mid-morning it was pretty nice, 70s and low humidity. Plus the hiker-biker trail is mostly shaded. I stopped at the farmers' market at the train station to look at the goods.
