Core strength 9:00 [3]

Daily Challenge.

Road running 33:30 [3] 3.8 mi (8:49 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 16

Finally got a new pair of shoes, Adrenaline 16. Both pairs of the 14s had over 500 miles on them. The new 16 seems like a pretty radical change. Noticeably shallower heel cup, for one thing. Makes me feel like I'm slipping out of the shoes, particularly going uphill. Also the sole seems stiffer, clonks on the ground instead of rolling. I'm not sure I like them, and I've had a long relationship with the Adrenaline line.

Core strength 9:00 [3]

Daily Challenge. I added 20 lunges with each leg.

Road running 33:36 [3] 3.8 mi (8:50 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

Drumm loop. It stopped drizzling and got a little lighter around noon, but it still wasn't a great day to be out.

Core strength 8:00 [3]

The Daily Challenge escalated today. Now it's 25 pushups, 10 triceps pushups (I still can't do these, but at least I do something), 1.5 min plank, 1.5 min wall sit, 30 squats, 20 figure-8s.

Road running 33:24 [3] 3.8 mi (8:47 / mi)

Regular Drumm loop, on another ridiculously warm December day.

Daily Challenge.

Road running 41:31 [4] 4.5 mi (9:14 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

Hill repeats. 6x33-35s on a moderate grade, jog back down. Then finished the run, the normal route, but it sure took a long time to recover.

Daily Challenge.

Road running 1:07:00 [3] 7.5 mi (8:56 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

I've been wanting to do a long run, and today seemed like a good day for it. A break in the rain, and temperature in the high 60s. Not sure of the time because I had to stop for a CSX freight train at the Forest Glen crossing and I don't know how long I was there, guessing a minute and a half, plus another 30 sec at the traffic light.

Daily Challenge.

Road running 42:00 [4] 4.8 mi (8:45 / mi)

Timed mile with Addie. We used the first half of the GSFC 2-mile course. 15:00 warm up, then the timed mile, then 15:00 cool-down. Addie ran 7:58. I paced her all the way, ran ahead to the finish, 7:48 or so.

Road running 32:57 [3] 3.8 mi (8:40 / mi)

Drumm loop. Early afternoon, sunny and calm but pretty cold, low 40s. The run felt great, although I was a little sore beforehand, so maybe the challenge is kicking in.

Addie has this Daily Challenge that her varsity frisbee team has to do. For this week, it's 15 pushups, 5 triceps pushups (I don't really understand the rules for these, but I can't do them anyway), 1-minute plank, 15 squats, 1-minute wall sit, 10 figure-8s. It's going to increase.

Road running 39:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

GSFC perimeter road. Chilly going out against the wind -- the sun was coming out but the temperature was dropping. Fine coming back.

Orienteering race 1:10:00 [3] 6.7 km (10:27 / km) +280m 8:39 / km
shoes: IceBug Olx 4

QOC McKeldin Red. Navigation was pretty easy (it's the way this park is) but there is some challenge in weighing climb vs distance in route selection. I lost a couple minutes here and there, particularly towards the end, I guess tiredness may have had something to do with it.

Certainly the general complaint of doglegs (maybe more appropriately termed in-and-out controls) is valid. I also thought there was some gratuitous climb. Other than those issues, which could have been addressed with a few course adjustments, I just think it's hard to make the courses interesting here. Oh, and I ran late, so I wasn't affected by any misplaced controls, thanks to the early runners who re-hung them.

Road running 33:47 [3] 3.8 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

Drumm loop again. It was cool and a little foggy when I ran in the morning, but on its way to 60 by the afternoon.

Road running 34:00 [3] 3.8 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

Around the Drumm loop at home. Last week I would have waited until noon for the temperature to go up, but it looks like the season in my head is finally changing too. Low 30s and comfortable running. I forgot to stop my watch when I got home.

Field work 1:53:00 [2] 6.0 km (18:50 / km)

I finally went out to the far west of Fountainhead and pulled down the streamers I put in last September. 16 locations, some trouble with 2 of them in the SE of the map, where the mapping is a little vague, but found them in the right features even if the approach wasn't what I expected. Mostly walking, some jogging. A really fine day, and the best of the area woods.

Met a couple of young people jogging on the trail, got into a conversation about orienteering. The guy, who was wearing a Patapsco t-shirt, knew about it, wanted to look at my compass, and wanted his GF to try it. I really hope to see them at some meet.

Orienteering race 1:53:00 [4] 7.1 km (15:55 / km)
shoes: IceBug Olx 4

What devil did I cross? Whoever he is, I hope he's satisfied.

Here's my run: fast and straight off the start, punched two controls, then I noticed that the second one wasn't on my course... and that meant neither was the first one.... So with the devil on my shoulder, I consulted the other side of the map, figured out where I was, and visited the actual first 3 controls. Then with the map upside down I ran 300m in the wrong direction, wondering why this awful crap was marked light green, cresting a hill and seeing... what?? Jeez, what a mess. So, falling into old patterns, I blundered around after that, hardly ever sure where I was, tentative at every step. It was hard work to finish the course, but what's this? Missed #10? Yes, I had punched at the wrong rootstock, and didn't check the number (I had actually seen it on the approach to #9 and therefore knew it had to be right). That's fitting.

But hey, let's look at the good side: how great is it to be running around in nice woods in short sleeves in December?

Road running 43:00 [3] 4.8 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 14

Around the Goddard perimeter road. Sunny, windy, high 40s. A few wet and muddy spots from the rain the last couple of days. It was a little tough going out against the wind, but fun coming back with it. This run felt really good.
