Road running 46:00 [3] 5.3 mi (8:41 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 15

I was going to run this morning; the sun was out, but just as I was getting ready there was a huge downpour. The radar map revealed more rain moving in. At noon it was about 100% humidity, but at least the water was staying in the air. Around the perimeter road and antenna range.

Orienteering race 59:51 [5] 5.7 km (10:30 / km) +370m 7:56 / km

QOC McKeldin Green. I ran this course pretty weill. One little problem coming down the big hill to #2, I didn't see anything I recognized as I was nearing the bottom, so I turned right and ran towards the road. That was the wrong choice, and the control was easy once I turned around.

It was hilly, as McKeldin will be, and the navigation was straightforward, because everything is a minimum of 4 contours and visible from some distance away. Not a lot of route choices. I took the road around to #13, and attacked from the little rock cluster just off the field. Basically straight line to 14, along the river to 15, then continued uphill to the road and crossed the field at its widest point -- fun running there.

Shadowed Florence on Brown. That got me off from having to do the memory-O, which I stink at.

Road running 35:11 [3] 4.0 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 15

The usual 4-mile loop. Major change in the weather: 52 degrees this morning.

Road running 36:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 15

Kind of dispiriting to be running in freezing conditions after a couple of weeks of spring weather. It was 23 deg when I got up, and only got up to 35 by 11 a.m. when I went out for a run.

Road running 50:00 [3] 5.8 mi (8:37 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 15

Another run at work. I wasn't carrying a watch yesterday or today, but today was faster, as well as being 30% longer. Minutes after I finished the sun finally came out and the temperature shot up 5 degrees.

Monday Mar 20, 2017 #

Road running 39:00 [3] 4.3 mi (9:04 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 15

Easy run around Goddard perimeter road. A little hypoglycemic towards the end.

Orienteering 58:00 [3] 6.0 mi (9:40 / mi) +140m 9:01 / mi
shoes: Icebug olx 2nd

QOC Wheaton Green. Very straightforward navigation, but I still managed to lose time in the neighborhood of a few of the controls. And twice I made a mistake on trail selection -- the difference between a major trail and a minor trail isn't always clear-cut.

I had visited the area of new construction on Saturday, to consult with Mihai on how to deal with it, and I also marked up all the maps. Not sure how much of advantage this was, if any.

Map Walk 30:00 [3] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)

Picking up controls at Wheaton.

Snow Shoveling 40:00 [3]

About 2 inches fell overnight, and this morning it was freezing rain, making the snow an icy mess. Tough going.

Note

QOC Happyland Training Day 2. I woke up at my usual time, but it was actually an hour later, 8 a.m., due to the time change. Whoops, better wake up Florence. Oh, never mind, she'd been up for 2 hours already, making breakfast.

I jogged from the dorm over to the kitchen, cooked the rest of the eggs and sausage, made more coffee, and took the time to eat some of the food. Then back to the dishwashing brigade.

Florence made an executive decision to cook fried rice for lunch, using the available leftovers plus some vegetables on hand. I did sous-chef duties and worked the grill, while she staged the ingredients and dumped them in to the mix.

Finally, after lunch, the last of the dishwashing and cleanup, and packing the car with the equipment and leftovers. We were complimented by the park staff on the condition in which we left the kitchen. On the way back home, while Florence slept, I listened to an amazing story on NPR "Reveal" about smuggling East African refugees into France.

Note

QOC Happyland Training Day 1. In the morning I went to Costco to buy the last-minute supplies. Bill: $320.00. Packed the van with about 100 lbs. of food and equipment. Got to Camp 5 just after noon, and started setting up for dinner. Drove over to Turkey Run Ridge to pick up more supplies that the lunch crew had brought with them.

For the rest of the afternoon, I helped with the dinner prep, chopping vegetables, moving trays in and out of the ovens and minding the stove. Most of the food for the dinner had been cooked at home during the previous week and just needed heating up. We had been fortunate that a cold front arrived mid-week to facilitate use of the large walk-in refrigerator that we normally use as a garage.

Dinner went well. Then more help with the clean-up, supervising the NJROTC crew assigned to dishwashing and housekeeping duties, and preparing more food for breakfast the next day.

Around the perimeter road at GSFC, including the antenna range. Temperature in the 60s, with the wind starting to come up. It was raining earlier, and supposed to rain later too.

A butterfly on the wing, the first of the season: a clouded sulphur.

Road running 35:23 [3] 4.0 mi (8:51 / mi)

Same as yesterday. 28 degrees, but it was comfortable. Maybe something about the sun angle.

Road running 35:02 [3] 4.0 mi (8:46 / mi)
