A little exploring on the logging roads. This one was overgrown in places, lots of raspberry (and some blood drawn). Turned around at a Y-intersection where neither fork looked very attractive. It looks like it's worth pushing on some more, but I should be wearing leg coverings.

Huge winds and high waves on the lake today. Temperature around 60, but that wind! The canoe got blown off the dock and filled with water, and it was acting like a sail, still attached to the dock. I hauled it out and got it up on shore. Foot-high breakers were washing over the dock. Big surf for a small lake. On the run we were exposed to the wind only for a little way, near the outlet. It felt fine.

Lido was determined to go with me, so I took the leash along and put him on it for the leg along U.S. 2. It's a wide shoulder, but still, the logging trucks are pretty scary. Speaking of which, since the last time I was on this route, a good-sized logging operation took place on the south side of Howard Mountain. There were piles of logs stacked up ready to be taken out, and near the bottom was a truck full of logs apparently stuck in the narrow road and a couple of guys standing there scratching their heads. We squeezed by and didn't ask, but they were impressed we had come from over the other side.

Late afternoon walk with the dog. I turned on the GPS so I could see where these old logging roads went. Looks like a possible link-up to a road going down the other side. Also the summit of Howard Mountain!

Tempo workout. 3x1 mile with 2-3 min jog in between. Times were 7:16, 7:29, 7:16. I'm not sure why the second one was so much slower. There was a headwind, maybe that was it.
The jog back involved 500 feet of elevation gain. That produced some lactic acid. I walked part of it, just for the sake of comfort.

The dog was being disobedient. I had to stop and go back for him several times when he wouldn't come out of the woods. I'm pretty sure he's finding something to eat -- something yucky no doubt.

Puzzle mountain, a new PR for the climb. (Previous best was 58 min, maybe 5 years ago.) Fine day, 70 degrees at the trailhead, partly cloudy, light breeze from the east mostly blocked by the ridge. Parking lot at the trailhead had 2 spaces left, and the second one was taken moments after I arrived. Someone wanted my space when I came down. That lot also serves as the trailhead for the Grafton Loop trail.
Lido came along, and he was great. I gave him about half my water at the top, and there are a few stream crossings lower down.
I'm in fifth place on the Strava segment, only a few seconds out of 3rd.

Over the hill and down to U.S. 2 and back, no pavement. I decided to go this way after I had already started running. The dog insisted on coming along, and without a leash I really couldn't have him on Rt. 2. So I thought of the out-and-back route.
Turns out back wasn't quite as easy as out, and I got off-track a few times. I used the Garmin "back to start" feature for the first time. It took me a while to find it on the watch, and then to figure out what it was telling me. For a while it wanted me to make a U turn when I was pretty sure I was going the right way, but that must have been because it wanted me to retrace the mistakes I'd already made. But after that it was fine, and it congratulated me when I got back to the start.

Attempt at a tempo run. 2x1-mile with about a 3 min jog in between. The first mile along the south shore, the second on the north shore. Target was 7:30 per mile, and I think I was pretty close, but it's hard to tell because it's far from flat and the distances of the two legs aren't exactly a mile. Then some strides on the way back. I really need to start doing these things if there are going to be any races at all this fall.
Hottest day this week, over 90 deg F in northern New England but at least 5 degrees cooler on the lake.

It was probably around 80 degrees, but the dog wanted to go along. There's access to water in a lot of places, and he seems to like the gross-looking drainage ditches along the sides of the road.

Over Howard Mountain and down to U.S. 2, back up Howard Pond Road. The first 2.5 miles are on an old logging road, a little soggy section at the beginning, and somewhat overgrown in places. Big trucks and little shade on Route 2, but at least it has wide shoulders. If there were a trail along the river this route would be brilliant. Steep 500-foot climb at the end.

Drove from MD to ME yesterday. Not a very fast trip. Some traffic, some construction delays, some torrential rains. Today, humid but not too hot. I walked around the lake, ran around the lake, and canoed around the lake. And got in a solid 6 hours at work. We're supposed to get bits of Tropical Storm Isaias tomorrow as it runs up the Connecticut River valley toward Western Maine.
