Addie and i did a 9-mile hike at Sunday River. There is a trail network for summer hiking, but it's not straightforward. There's some assembly required. It was hard to find the start of the White Cap Summit Trail, hard to follow the Summit Traverse Trail, and we never found the Spruce Cliffs trail, instead scrambling up the cliffs themselves (not recommended). From then on it was bushwhacking and ski trails. There was a good bit of map and compass work necessary throughout.

However, the views were fantastic. The Mahoosuc Range was on close-up display, from Mt. Carlo and Goose Eye, through Mahoosuc Notch and up to Old Speck. Also the Grafton Loop ridge running from Old Speck across Sunday River Whitecap. Mt Washington was clearly visible in the distance, still with snow fields.

Long Mountain trail, with Steve, Florence, Addie, Lido. A new trail S of Bethel, first time for me. Easy grade through nice forest alongside a small river for most of the way, which goes in and out of rocky canyons with some small waterfalls. Then up to the top of the ridge with views toward the southwest and back down.

Bethel Town Forest Summit Ridge trail, with Addie and Lido. Another fine area dedicated to the public by the Mahoosuc Land Trust. There's a new side trail, I don't think it was there last year, that goes out 2.5 miles to a series of cascades. For a future hike.

We drove to western Maine yesterday, light traffic except at the I-91 junction with I-84, 10.5 hours including 3 short stops.

It was over 90 yesterday and today, but about 5 degrees cooler on the lake. Water temperature is 68. Today we took a short hike up to the Glassface ledges, on a new trail on Mahoosuc Land Trust property. With Florence, Addie. and Lido.
