UTCT 35km. Knew there was a very solid German guy racing, so thought I'd probably be going for 2nd.

But people went off very chilled and I ended up running in front on my own for the first 90min, even with a pretty conservative start. Heard the German guy come in to the scout hour aid station as I was leaving, so was expecting him to come past soon after. Held him off to top of Nursery ravine and then decided to attack it a bit and see if he stuck. Ended up pulling over a min on the 7min descent, so that was a nice confidence booster. Enjoyed the contour path and the descent down to UCT. Spent a bit of time in the aid station there making sure I was stocked up and then it was time for the death climb up to blockhouse. Luckily had Jono for this section which was great for morale as I was starting to overheat a bit. Got to the flat section and immediately started cramping in the calves.. The classic 3ish hour barrier.. Luckily loosened up a bit after a bit of flat and even though I wasn't moving fast, I still kept a bit of rhythm at least (forgot how not flat the contour is..). Then started going down again and wasn't able to see anyone behind, so feeling a bit more confident. Got down past deadman tree and then rolled the ankle with 3ish km to go.. feck.. Luckily not bad, carry on. 200m later, roll it again.. Shuffle into the finish from here with a nice walk up the embankment to the finish on the fields. Very happy to find it a bit shorter than 35km.

Happy with the race until uct, from there it was just surviving. Heat got to me a bit and I definitely seem to have some issues with cramping over 3ish hours mark (even with a bunch of salt tablets). Guess it will just take more racing/hard trainings at these distances.

German guy suffered a lot more with the heat though, so ended up actually having a 15ish min lead in the end, and Hayley another 3min back in 3rd overall!

Down from Victoria via a breakfast stop at the Assegaaiboskloof/panorama nek and down the panorama tail. Then a swim in the river and a bit along the jeep before managing to find a lift back into Stellies.

Very nice sunrise and awesome to be up in the mountains this time of day :)
