6 AM

Running (mostly hard surfaces) 10:40 [3] 1.0 mi (10:40 / mi)

Pretty out. Ran to Jamba Juice and back. The Krispy Kreme was open. I'm a fan but didn't manage to eat any on this trip:(

orienteering (Sprint #1) 18:02 [4] 3.07 km (5:52 / km) +60m 5:21 / km

Hard to find anything I'd change about either of my races today. In both of them, I probably PR'd in amount of physical effort while still having a clean race. I was able to choose routes quickly and without second-guessing myself, and I always knew the control description and (almost always) which way to exit. Hesitated a few times in the first race, but I've also done that in my very best sprints, so I can't really complain.

Strategy and mental prep were also good. Still drained from the middle, so it was the right choice to skip the long. Would've still been the right choice with a lot less drained-ness. Also did a good job of not letting doubts about my training seep into my races (race-day routine). I was on the edge of being able to handle Team Trials as my first race back, and I feel like I was able to respond well to a difficult situation.

I probably could've done a better job eating after the race. I was feeling lightheaded, Ali asked me if I'd eaten enough, I thought I had, but then I felt better after lunch. Something to keep in mind for the future.

Running (mostly hard surfaces) 25:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warmup with Evalin and Melanie, plus other random jogging around.

orienteering 18:21 [5] 3.11 km (5:54 / km) +43m 5:31 / km

Tired! One 10-second exit-direction mistake.

orienteering 1:23:40 [4] **** 4.5 km (18:36 / km)

Middle. Sloppy race, huge mistake on first control caused by poor choice of process goals. Then the course was a lot longer than predicted, and I didn't have water (none along the routes I chose) or Gu (thought I'd finish under an hour). As my college coach would say, it was a good opportunity to 'callus my mind'.

But I wasn't thinking like an athlete for various reasons, so my mind didn't get much callusing. I maybe could've fixed this by talking more with Kelli (coach) about training, priorities, etc. before coming to CA, but maybe not. The long-term answer is just to figure out my priorities, training, etc., which is the main goal in my training plan.

Also, knee is magically better!!! It was feeling twingey yesterday, but today it felt perfect.

orienteering 20:00 [3] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

Ran into Cristina in the parking lot of the map we went to. Crazy!

I feel like I got a good sense of what vegetation detail can be like in CA, how distinct the boundaries are, etc. For a few controls, I practiced the same things I practiced on the plane: quickly picking a route, planning my exit, finding a good place to read ahead, and going through the point smoothly.

At least on this map, Cristina said light green vs. white wasn't really distinguishable, and Ian said dark green vs. medium green wasn't that distinguishable.

Running (mostly hard surfaces) 15:00 [3] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

To lab. Knee feels great so far!

Note

Inflammation in my knee while walking around, but no sharp pain.

In other news, the start time gods were merciful—I'm almost the first starter in the first sprint on Sunday!!! Starting to get excited! And I might get to warm up with Tori on Friday:)

core/legs 8:00 [1]

Knee exercises. Felt good.

Running (mostly hard surfaces) 15:00 [3] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Knee hurt going down steps but was fine running on flat pavement.
