Roller derby 30:00 [1]
rhr:51 slept:8.0 (injured)

Hoooray all the undergrads are studying for finals, and so the basketball courts were free!!! To take advantage of the once-in-several-weeks opportunity, I started getting back into the groove of crossovers and laps. First did some crossovers around the circle at half-court, and then started with laps in derby direction. Was really getting into a groove! Also feeling in general more comfortable on my skates than the last times I've done laps--maybe the crazy-8's I've been doing have been helping with my edges. Since there's a pretty close correspondence between the basketball court markings and where the track goes, I think I should time myself soon to see how close I am to 27 in 5.

Then did non-derby direction, felt a bit less comfortable. Got a few good laps in, was getting more comfortable, and then fell on my same hip again!!!! It was a slow fall, and so I really have no excuse. Should've dropped a knee (or both) instead. Boo. Was lots of pain (although not dizzy this time), so I took skates off and walked back to lab, where I conveniently had my fancy ice pack stored in the first-floor freezer. Hurts to walk (probably just bc of the swelling), although not as bad as last time.

Marking it as an official injury bc shouldn't work out, at least at the moment. It was almost healed before I fell again, so hoping it goes down quicker than the last one. Should practice falling on kneepads, but in the meantime ordered fancy padded shorts that should get here Tuesday.

Lab video game night and I took a break from games to try to practice heel kicks annnnnnnnd I fell on my hip and it didn't make anything worse!!!!! So I'll say I'm unofficially healed, but it was carpet and low speeds, but a week ago it would've been terribly painful and now it's basically completely fine a couple hours after falling :) Go me!!! Will maybe skate some this weekend, we'll see.

Colloquium speaker today was one of the labs I applied to for grad school 2 years ago!!! :D Current PI awkwardly asked "do you know each other?" and then realized maybe an awkward question. Hehe.

They reformatted the grad-colloquium chat session, and this one was like the best I've been to! Also undergrad in the lab who's applying to speaker's lab also got to sneak in and make a good impression and then introduce himself :D Colloquium speaker was really good at talking to students outside his area, which is part of what made the chat session so good.

Also note about sleep: couldn't sleep in bc I have too good of a circadian rhythm and so woke up at my normal time and was tired despite free coffee in the morning (incl. 2 espresso shots), and also probably not very able to mask my emotions at seeing creepy professor at colloquium. Annoying. But the talk was good.

Very fun session at the tennis courts across from lab! Was sore today, but the kind that goes away after warming up :)

Started with 15 min of crazy 8's on the line that goes across the middle of the tennis court. (Don't know what it's called.)

A few plows, a few t stops, also tried doing those while skating laps around the whole tennis court. Harder.

Did 2-foot weaving between imaginary cones.

Practiced skating on one leg, even tried weaving on one leg, but hard to use my outside edge (which I think isn't something that people usually say to do anyway, but would be fun to be able to turn both ways on one leg!).

Did transitions some more, again can consistently do them with 3-4 strides of acceleration and then a transition, but hard when going around in a circle. Was experimenting getting more and more aggressive with the speed before the transition, but fell hard on my butt (and accidentally put a straight arm down, which is a huge no-no!!!). Shoulder wasn't actually hurt, but need to practice falling better still. But at least didn't fall on my hip :D

Also practiced a thing with similar footwork to a transition, called a heel kick. It's basically for being able to skate laterally across the track while still facing forward/backward (to get in people's way better). Can now do it while holding onto the fence!!! Also can sometimes do it while letting go of the fence. It's hard for me to get my toes be 180 degrees from each other, but found another video of a guy who's doing them but definitely not doing that, so that's helpful.

Woops I realize I've been sitting at lab for an hour watching skating how-to's instead of working...

Note

Also the knot on my leg/hip seems to have dramatically changed shape to be more like a ridge than an even bump. There's a shallower slope towards the front of my leg and a steeper slope towards the back. Not sure why. I didn't fall on my hip, and it's not any more painful than before (maybe even less painful?). Is possibly larger. But seems like it can't be a problem if it's not more painful. Maybe it'll stick around to be extra padding for next time.

Leg strength for skating:

15 x each leg, one-legged squats on stairs (2 stairs)
30 speedskaters
10 forward lunges each leg
10 side lunges each leg
10 side lunges each leg, toes out
10 jumping lunges each leg (have a name but I forget)
20 more speedskaters
50 seconds low derby stance (like wall sits but like basketball stance instead). This part was hard!

Talked to university person, accomplished goal of cataloging creepy professor incident but apparently this was the first incident with his name attached to it to be reported at the university level in the decades that he's widely reported by multiple different sources to have been creepy. So feels kind of like a waste since the thing that got forwarded this time was one of the more minor things, but at least now there's one thing cataloged, and I also don't have to deal with it anymore! Woohoo!

Roller derby 15:00 [1]
rhr:52 slept:7.6

Kind of rough practice. The skills test was today, which I'd been looking forward to before I got hurt, and I decided to go so I could see what the test was like, even though I couldn't do the laps or anything involving contact with other players (hip bumps, driving people off the track). Did the parts of it I could do, but wished I could've done them better, even though it didn't count for anything! Didn't feel comfortable enough to practice transitions at speed yesterday, but tried them anyway today and fell, but thankfully on my kneepads. On the bright side, I did knee taps and double-knee taps better than the last time I tried them, even though I hadn't really practiced them!!! Also when I watched people do the contact-y parts of it, there was lots of falling, which made me feel less like I was missing out and more like I'd made the right decision not to do those parts. Stayed and watched the rest of the practice after, and I learned complicated things about roller derby rules. Buttttt a bit emotionally rough, and it's a long commute for me to get 15 minutes of skating in. So may not go Thursday.
