Roller derby 42:00 intensity: (22:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)
rhr:45 slept:6.75

Yayyyyy slept in and still got a basketball court all to myself!!!

Warmed up by doing a thing Nick was showing me at practice Thursday to get in the rhythm of crossovers: start with tiny steps in a little circle, keeping the steps kind of even amounts of time, and then gradually take bigger/stronger steps till you're in a bigger circle. Also did figure 8's this way.

Then did intervals, and I actually skated fast enough to get myself tired! Fun! Did a pyramid-type thing where I did 1 lap on + 2 off, 2 on 2 off, up to 7, then back down to 4 before I was starting to have bad form for awhile but was holding it together, and then later fell (remembered the padded shorts today!) and decided to low-speed stuff.

Slower stuff: transitions, turn-around toe stops, some slow suicides w turn-around toe stops, then the expanding-circle crossover thing again. Fun session! So lucky to have a good place to skate outside of practice!

Note

Feeling sluggish and head feels a bit funny. Can't tell if it's related to falling (didn't hit head, but was surprised at how clumsy/slow I felt after, given that I wasn't really hurt--but I guess I was already pretty tired) or participating in an fMRI experiment afterwards where I stayed completely motionless in a tiny tube with too-tight head padding for 2 hours. Doesn't feel too bad, but wanted to write down anyway :)

ANNOYED ANNOYED need to rant:

I was on the bus to lab, and these cute middle-aged women got on the bus through the back door and were clearly not familiar w San Diego public transit, and there were a bunch of UCSD students who were helping them figure out which bus to take (cute). Then they were very cheerfully making conversation, and one of them was from Hawaii, and she was talking about how public transit in SD was so much better (which is funny to me, having lived in Boston, hehehe), bc in Hawaii there's only 1 bus and it goes all the way around the island and takes 5 hours. Then one of the students who was helping her earlier was like "yeah, I'm from st. louis", and in my head, I was like oh, that's exciting to come across another st. louisan at UCSD, bc usually all the undergrads are from CA. And then she's like "You don't take public transit there unless you want to get mugged." Which is SO SO false, and I should have said something, but I was only peripherally a part of the conversation, and I was still waking up, and I wasn't fast enough... so now I'm just grumbling about it to myself.

Warming up to do leg stuff.

strength 7:00 [1]

Was really excited to do leg press but didn't realize we were supposed to bring our own towels to the weight room and I wasn't allowed in without a towel :( So did body-weight stuff instead. Unexciting, but not the worst thing in the world.

Allllllso my Amazon-one-day-pickup KT tape came, so trying out a new tape job that should be better for bend-y knees than the leukotape one I got when I first had knee problems! (Bc the leukotape doesn't stretch and goes straight across my kneecap.) Will see how it goes! Hoping to skate some tomorrow. If I go to bed now I might be able to get to the basketball courts tomorrow before anyone's using them. The new guest coach was giving me tips on crossovers last practice, and also we did some fartlek-y type things and I realized I'm really bad at accelerating and also maintaining a fast speed. My lower legs feel weak and unstable, and probably the solution is getting used to the movements and building some strength.

Roller derby 25:00 [1]

Knee felt kind of ok, didn't do any drills with contact or anything that bothered it, e.g., non-derby-direction pace line. Also there were some assistant coaches helping the newbies with stuff tonight, which was nice.

strength (knee exercises) 12:28 [1]

Knee felt good enough today to start up knee exercises again! Did 8 lbs each leg (I think), the standard set of leg raises, 20 reps each leg/exercise, then another set.

Other exciting news today: our electronic safe at lab malfunctioned, and I discovered that there's a backup real key, then I asked the lab manager where it was, and she said it was in a locked cabinet and realized that the key to the locked cabinet was locked inside of the safe :o Called building manager bc they keep copies of most of our cabinet keys, then he had about 5 key rings of cabinet keys but not ours. But he showed me how to retrieve all the money from the safe through a slit in the top of the safe and suggested we toss this safe anyway and get a new one bc you can steal all the money out of it. Hehe.

Kayaking for 1.5 hours to recruit a new postdoc, but not sure it's worth logging. We saw seals, so hopefully she comes here!!!

Wore my fancy knee brace today, and no knee pain, and pretty sure the last advil I took was when I had to pee in the middle of the night, so I think that bodes well! If all feels good tomorrow, I might go to practice tomorrow and do non-contact stuff (mental note to try kneepads on over my knee brace).

rhr:47 slept:6.75 (injured) (rest day)

Ok, knee officially bothers me when I'm not using it, so marking an injury. Boo :(

Ibuprofen last night, this morning, and this afternoon. Trying a light patellofemoral tape job, but the inflammation seems to be pretty distributed/not motion-specific at this point, so didn't want to do the aggressive tape job w the leukotape, in case that put more pressure on my kneecap/irritated the inflamed things.

Roller derby 40:00 [1]
rhr:50 slept:7.7

Practice cancelled, so skated around the tennis court at lab! Ooooooooommgggg so much more time than bussing all the way to practice and then home!

Now I'm a little more confident that the knee thing is patellofemoral stuff, which I know how to deal with. I didn't do anything with squatting, which meant I was mostly doing transitions the whole time, which was fine with me :) Now I'm almost as confident stepping with my left leg as with my right! Not super fast speeds, though. I'm also resolving the issue of the transition being less fluid when opening with my left leg, and I think it depends on how much I use the edge of my other foot when turning. Will pay more attention to this.

At the end I did a *few* reps of accelerating on my toe stops and then a turn-around toe stop trying to stop before one of the painted lines. Fun!!! Esp. bc accelerating on my toe stops is basically running :)

Tried crossovers at the beginning, and were bad for my right knee, then tried some snail-pace ones at the end and they seemed fine. (Did more in non-derby direction though, in case derby direction was what bothered it in the first place.) Was fun to vary up the motion a bit to get more confident with different strides!
