Roller derby 40:00 [1]

Power skate at Skateworld! So good, floor is slipperier than our normal practice surfaces, so good for learning stops (actually kind of did a passable hockey stop this time!). Was a bit scary to do sprints around the derby track (they have one painted on the floor!!!!), but encouraged me to stay low and be smooth with my strides. Also: we did backwards skating as part of an endurance obstacle course, and we also did it around the track as a cooldown! Getting better!!!

Edit: just so my parents don't think I'm neglecting grad school with all this roller derby, sent my first manuscript draft to my advisor today. Woo! I've written with him before and he's pretty efficient, so hopefully things go quickly :) Tomorrow, working on stuff for Julie (previous advisor), hopefully sending update to her by end of day. And already found an interested undergrad to continue the grunt work on that project.

Lots of technique! Bullseye re-created a practice on strides that she dropped in on when she was in DC. Were a few points where I got tired, but don't think it was that long total.

Re: sleep: have a 9am MWF class this quarter, using it as an excuse to shift sleep schedule earlier, but painful at the beginning... need to stick with it! Also I don't know what's up with these low sleeping HR's. It's only ever been down to 45 before this last couple weeks. Either I'm getting more fit, I'm getting older, or my replacement fitness tracker records slightly differently than the last 2 did. (This last replacement was free, thank goodness.)

Edit: forgot to note that I had a minor head hit. Fell on my left elbow, jamming my shoulder up, and hit the side of my helmet once against my shoulder. Head hurt for a few minutes, first in the side and then in the front, so Zombie had me take my helmet off and do a concussion test before skating again. Felt fine and everything felt normal after that.

Wall sit challenge. Teammate posted in the fb group her wall sit time and had us all try to post our times. Got tired after 2:03 and nobody had a better time yet, so stopped here with the plan of re-doing if someone beat it. Wowwwww used to do these all the time as part of PT for knees, and it's wayyyy harder than it used to be!!!

Helped Bubblegum time her laps in the morning, talked about 27 in 5 (lap requirement for passing minimum skills). Then we both went to Sin City Skates, and I got a toe stop washer replaced, and she got new toe stops, and then we went and got Regent's Pizza!

Didn't have much workout in the morning, so went to my apt's tennis courts after and did some high-rep skills stuff. Plows, jammer toe stop stuff, backwards crossovers, etc etc.

Yessssss another fantastic night of sleep, and woke up w completely normal range of motion. Now can roll over on my right side pain-free when sleeping.

Convinced a few people to come to campus to skate w me tomorrow, and I'm gonna time one of the freshies on laps and then do some light skills-type stuff.

In other news: won a $1600 travel award to the conference I'm going to in May! Especially exciting bc the application outlined my proposed research plan, which is the branch of my research that came more from me than my advisors. Also, yay money!

Also got to take a look at some more of my EEG data today. Hopefully making enough progress for the next abstract submission deadline!

Annnnnnd in the world of Pokemon, there are now special "research" challenges where you get to help Professor Willow and hopefully get a Mew at the end. Yay Mew!

Was gonna go to practice to hang out w the freshies, since I wasn't doing contact stuff. Butttt was gonna meet a teammate for coffee and then get a ride to practice, but her [brand new-to-her] car started smoking when she was about to pick me up, so I went to go help her figure out what to do, and then she didn't make it bc waiting to get it towed, and I was late. Then helped some freshies set up an approximate track and then get timed on laps so they could see what it felt like.

Then got a ride home and went on a Rose Canyon run!!! Pretty! Hip had 0 pain, and I felt like my stride length was normal again, even up and down hills. Still a part that hurts when I press on it, but I think it's already smaller than the bump I got 4 months ago! Hopefully will go away soon :D

Still not sleeping the best. Partly light coming in my room, partly hip. Range of motion a bit better this morning than last night before bed. Converging answers from roller derby captain/labmate who's a Dr. say it's normal for a bad fall to cause muscle strain-y symptoms.

Hoping to go for a run today/tonight, maybe from campus down to Scripps Pier if it's not too steep for my hip/butt. Could be pretty :)

running 1:05:00 [3] 5.98 mi (10:52 / mi) +162m 10:02 / mi

Strava cut off the second half of my run, so grabbed distance from previous runs and filled in pace with what it was for the first half.

Hip/butt had better range of motion today, but legs felt a little dead. Possibly just tightened up/weird bc of hip/butt pain causing a tight stride. Wore shorts under my tights, and no pain from the swelling bouncing after like the 2 minutes. Also swelling noticeably smaller. Knees didn't feel perfect, but didn't feel terrible either.

Labmate told me about the Pokemon event going on, and I'd been completely out of the loop bc spending all my time skating! Hatched 8 10k eggs at once using a star piece, so 4x stardust :D Brought my bracelet with me, so minimal disruption during the run!
