Morning SDRD scrimmage! Barely enough people, so they gave us longer breaks (bc people get sloppy and are more likely to skate dangerously when tired, which we want to avoid). Mixture of blocking and jamming, and got more comfortable throughout. First time actually scrimmaging in awhile!!!!! As a blocker, got better at staying together. As a jammer, got better at avoiding people when they were spread out.

Roller derby 15:00 intensity: (5:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) + (5:00 @5)

Freshie scrimmage after Rough Diamond Rebels bout! They're a team near Riverside. Went with another teammate, Tawnya (Rarity). She's definitely for sure a freshie, and I've skated a few bouts, so it was good for both of us! We both got to jam. :D And I also blocked.

I did a good job of picking seams to break through, I usually got lead jammer, and the only time I didn't, I caught back up and scored as many points as her bc she didn't call off the jam in time. The jammer I was up against the most I think was from RDR, named Macknificent. Wanna remember her name, bc I think we're about the same level and it'll be fun to see her at scrimmages and stuff! We had some fun jams where she got out right behind me. One time I called it off, a few times I tried to score before she did, and one time I slowed down and tried to mess her up a bit and then called it off when she didn't fall for it.

Rarity said sometimes I was losing time slowing down before I hit the pack, and maybe I could have more time to score points if I kept the speed up as I was looking at the pack and looking at the bench. One of the RDR players said afterwards that both Rarity and I could be smarter with the way we hit the seams, and if we hit one of them more sideways, we can break a hole open better. One thing I thought I did well was avoiding blockers when they were strung out, using my edges to dodge one way or the other.

Note: apparently forgot to start recording on my Garmin. I bought screen protectors so I can wear it while playing, and I turn the face around to the inside of my wrist.

Note

Feet felt a bit iffy yesterday, so decided to take it easy today, especially bc I just had a long-ish period of only working out 3 times a week. (And I did more training on Sunday than I meant to, and I might do 2 scrimmages this Saturday.)

<3 power skate!!! There were only 2 other skaters there, both juniors I think. They were pretty good at transition toe stops but not great at endurance. I think I've seen one of them before but not the other. Then one of the Skateworld employees came out and skated with us, which was good bc he was faster and it was a good challenge to try to beat him.

Wins: I passed Su (instructor) 2 times on Crazy 8's, and I thought she was going easy, but she commented on how I passed her, so I actually don't think she was going super easy on purpose. Yay!!! Also the new wheels make it easier to cross over out of the turns! I still think I could take a wider arc on the way out, bc the way I'm doing it now I sometimes turn really sharply and only get one crossover in. I guess it depends on if I'm trying get in the way of someone trying to pass me and need to take a sharper turn to keep them from getting by. Technique-wise, I think I'm getting better at pushing out with my feet on a crossover, and also (at least going derby direction) taking fast steps to accelerate.

Other win: got my wheels clipped by the fast guy twice on crazy 8's, and I didn't fall or even lose my balance very much!!! Yay!!!! Also beat the juniors to the inside lane of the track when we were doing half-lap sprints, even when I started on the outside.

Lose: realized I accidentally broke my chest strap trying to take it off the other day. Taped it back together w electrical tape, but it stopped displaying a HR sometime near the end of the session. (Ordered a new one, but still the cheaper version w the plastic strap.)

Derby practice!!! Very endurance-focused, and never realized I could get my HR this high by skating! (Side note: a formula I found online thinks that 29-year-old women have max HRs of like 180, and I'm positive I didn't even max out this time, so maybe there's just a lot of individual variability in max HRs?)

It's too much to write all the things we did, but my "wins" were feeling confident on my new wheels, which are skinnier and harder than my old ones, and also doing some good edging around cones and also starting to get comfortable enough to start to do some hockey stops on the Sunday floor. Yay!!! And also keeping up w the endurance part of the workout, but I think at this point that's something I'm pretty confident in.

Other win: figured out how to get my Garmin import to do intensity mixes!!!! Made my "3" roughly the range of an easier-than-tempo run, ~140-170. And guessed my max HR is ~200, but don't think I've really maxed out in awhile. I guess I'll just keep wearing it and see how high it gets and guess if I'm close to my max or not :D Might go to power skate Tuesday to get used to the wood floor, we'll see how I feel!!!

So I got a little overly excited today... It's been cloudy the past few days, so the weather's a little cooler than normal, and the run was nice! First got ice cream w teammates after practice, came home, did some skate maintenance, and then was light out and still had all my gear and my Garmin on, so decided to go on a run in the canyon!!! Woohoo!!! I realize this is not smart to do regularly (especially after looking at HR data and seeing how much of derby practice was actual exercise--woops!), so don't worry, I'm not planning on doing this very often. But look Mom, I go running now!!!
