orienteering race 2:44:19 [2]**** 13.9 km (11:49 / km) +410m 10:18 / km
17c
French Creek East - DVOA Long Champs

I was happy to finish. Almost immediately after starting my left calf started hurting, and it got really bad after 15 minutes when running on a track. Almost looped back to the start then, but after driving 3 hours to get there, I didn't really want to do that. I found it wasn't so bad in the forest and it even seemed to ease up a bit in the middle of the course. Bet I pay for it this week though.

Made a couple of 1 minute mistakes at controls 13 and 16 - getting tired and stressed by the fact that the course was supposed to close at 3.00. I didn't know if the Sportident units were going to turn off. They didn't, and I got back about 10 minutes late.

I took 22:07 for about 1.5 km on pretty much a straight line from 4-5. The start of the leg was a climb of 10 contours in about 150 metres horizontally. And then there was a long traverse with about 600 metres of boulder field. The alternative was to go around the boulder field by climbing an additional 13 contours and departing from the straight line by 750 metres, and then dropping down on the control from a long way above. I don't know if that would have been quicker.

I lost about 3 minutes on the first control. I thought I was on a track, and then it disappeared, leaving me to struggle through a boulder field. From looking at others' routes on Route Gadget it's clear the track existed. I took 14:50 for a 1 km leg.

Although I made only a few mistakes, I wasn't orienteering especially well. A few times on long legs I would get into the general area, and then relocate - there was enough detail to do this fairly quickly. Other times, the control would just pop up in front of me, even when I wasn't expecting it. What I certainly wasn't doing was planning the exit out of the controls before getting to them.

Blue - Splits

Saturday Oct 21

running 1:00:00 [2]10.5 km (5:43 / km)
Home - Mall - Supreme Court - Lincoln Memorial

Thursday Oct 19

running 40:00 [2]6.7 km (5:58 / km)
Home - Tidal Basin - Lincoln Memorial

Didn't pay attention to exactly how long I took.

Took the day off work - I'm exhausted, my heart rate feels high, and there have been a bunch of stressful things going on. Just needed to calm down, get the apartment in order, and maybe this weekend I can tackle my paper on the marginal cost of public funds. At least Emmanuelle will be happy.

Wednesday Oct 18

running 30:00 [2]5.4 km (5:33 / km)
Tidal Basin - Lincoln Memorial

Monday Oct 16

running 30:00 [2]5.24 km (5:44 / km)
Tidal Basin. The end of a stressful day back in Washington, complete with jetlag to add to the fun.
