| Lake Fairfax - Long Sprint
7th place. 4'21'' off Ted's third place, with two execution errors (#6, #10) costing 50'' and 44'' respectively, and a route choice error (#9) (the track was faster than the straight line). I was pushing for the first half, but then the pace dropped off noticeably, and I was having trouble with the pace by the end. It's a worry, when I can't sustain the pace over 5 km. But most worrying were the two execution errors. Lapses of concentration immediately before a change of direction were the cause. And I guess they could have been corrected by having better plans as I left the previous control. But also, in both cases I found the terrain mid-way confusing as things didn't quite match up with what I was expecting.

| Medium sprint
6th place. 33 seconds between me and Ted's second place. I got up to 3rd place mid-way through, but then gradually dropped down the ladder. WinSplits says I didn't make any mistakes, but looking again at the map, that's nothing to be proud of. It was a very very easy course. So it's just down to leg speed, which doesn't worry me at all at this stage. I do feel like a slug, but that's age, which affects us all differently, plus my poor health over the last couple of years. The important thing is not to make mistakes in the navigation.

| Short sprint
Lovely day. At 2C the day seemed warm after the recent weather. Heading out of DC the Potomac was frozen in action, and looking lovely. Don't see that in Australia. Despite my misgivings about sprints, I enjoyed these runs. It felt good to have some flow going, even if the reason was that the navigation was incredibly easy. And afterwards, there was warmth and pizza and people to chat to. Could almost think I was in France, except there it would have been a boeuf bourgignon and red wine. All very nice.

| running 38:00 [2]6.3 km (6:02 / km) | ||
| Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial - 11.30 pm
Getting the run in a little earlier. Who knows, I may one day get back to running in daylight hours. I wondered if it was a full moon tonight, but Attackpoint weather tells me it's a "waning gibbous" which sounds like an impotent monkey to me. In any case strange things are afoot. Before setting out I decided to try Gu for the first time. It was also the last time. The taste was disgusting, and the texture made me think of kava pre-masticated by someone dying during the 1918 influenza epidemic. I took a tumble as I took a new route in the dark, and grazed my elbow through five layers of clothes. As I trotted back from the Mall I noticed a really hot woman in tight jeans and boots with high heels on the corner of 15th and L. She assured me "I can still warm you up if you wannit". I agreed that it was indeed cold. College kids were down on the Mall singing something about Beta Phi or some such. I wonder if they will look back with emotion to the days when they sang in harmony of the joys of fraternity on the snowy lawns of the Mall. Oh well, I can't criticize. This week's Economist makes reference to the Qantas ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1jm9aFez7w noting its eye-moistening effect. I plead guilty. Maybe it's time? Nah. One more year.

| running 28:00 [2]4.8 km (5:50 / km) | ||
| Washington Monument, 12.30 am
Not sure of the time, because I wasn't wearing my watch. It's still quite cold (-8C, feels like -14C), and there's some snow around, but with five layers up top, and two pairs of gloves, it felt positively balmy by comparison with two nights ago. I suspect this may be the first time since I started in August that I've actually put 7 days in a row together. Well I'll celebrate any victory, even the smallest, given the big ones don't seem too common. Productive day at work. Think I'm getting my act together at last. Skipped lunch, knowing that I had 2 quails waiting for me for dinner. Yum. Now I just have to start shifting my sleep patterns to something more normal, and get that damn paper on the marginal cost of public funds finished.

| running 21:00 [2]3.5 km (6:00 / km) | ||
| Streets of Dupont Circle
It's snowing! Lovely powdery stuff. And at 1.00 am, not a soul is stirring on the streets. The cops patrol, and for once I don't hear a siren sound (though in only 20 minutes perhaps that's not too much of a surprise). Made an advance in my exercises today. Too bad the running isn't advancing. Must get onto a better cycle. I have a lovely declining ramp happening. Better get my running into an upswing.
Monday Feb 5 | ||
| running 28:30 [2]4.8 km (5:56 / km) | ||
| Washington Monument, 1:00 am.
Even colder (-11C, feels like -18C). The Attackpoint weather gave warnings of potential frostbite, and advised covering up. Two thermal underwear, a t-shirt, a rugby jersey and a woolly jumper (what do you get when you cross a sheep with a kangaroo?). Down below, fleecy pants and track-suit pants. And still the wedding flute came back as an ice block. Had a video-conference with Jakarta this evening. It looks like my project is over. Ding dong, the witch is dead. So I guess I can go to Atlanta after all. Very happy about that. Life is on the upswing.
