| Medium distance - World Ranking Event
Umstead State Park, Raleigh, North Carolina Peggy did a good job with the course-setting. It kept me thinking the whole way, even though the terrain wasn't especially tricky. The controls were hung very low, which caused a few little problems. I lost about 4 minutes on #4 and #7 combined. #4 was a combination of the control's being hung low, and the map's being not quite right, so I don't mind too much on that (ie, I was only partly at fault, so no point in self-flagellation). #7 was a pit on a hill-side. I should have got a good attackpoint rather than just running up the (wrong) hill, hoping to see it. A lesson to be remembered, hopefully.

| After the race, a brief plodding cool-down, just to meet my week's training targets.
And after a shower, mosied in to downtown Raleigh in the afternoon. It was as dead as Canberra on a Sunday, though pleasant enough in an entirely anodyne way. Passed some money-lenders and construction sites and happened upon City Markets, where there was an art gallery. I bought a painting. The unexpected pleasures of an orienteering weekend.

| Umstead State Park, Raleigh, North Carolina
A really neat little sprint. A few quick sharp turns with easy controls, a good route choice problem, and then a couple of slightly more technical controls. I lost a little time on #7 (hesitant) and #8 (hesitant on the way, and then overshot). If I don't watch out, I might have to re-evaluate my views on sprints.
Long Sprint - Splits | ||
Thursday Mar 1 | ||
| running 44:50 [3]8.1 km (5:32 / km) | ||
| Memorial and 14th St Bridges - early afternoon
A quick spin across the river between interviewing a job candidate and a team meeting. A honk of geese grazed by the (non-)reflecting pool. Unsuspected bulbs have poked up on the far side of the Potomac. Tidal Basin is still covered in a sheet of ice. School kids politely parted like the Red Sea before Moses as I came through. Thinking about my work program. It's tempting to go back to Australia to change the world, but if I stay here, developing a research/analytical program could have its attractions. It would involve less travel than last year, which would be a Good Thing, for orienteering and general quality of life. Dang blister.

| Memorial and 14th St Bridges, Mall to 7th - lunchtime
It seemed a kinder and gentler pace than yesterday's testosterone frenzy. Certainly I was in a more reflective mood. But I got back 30 seconds faster. And another mystery. Why, with a well-worn pair of shoes, have I suddenly developed a blister on my left instep? A bit of a worry given this weekend's races.
Tuesday Feb 27 | ||
| running 55:30 [3]10.2 km (5:26 / km) | ||
| Memorial and 14th St Bridges, Mall to 7th St, late lunch.
Single layer weather. At 9C it was 20 degrees higher than a couple of weeks ago. Felt like Floyd Landis on his famous hill climb for the first half, then eased back to an unjuiced Floyd Landis for the third quarter, and then did a Robbie McEwen sprint up the Champs Elysees as I turned for home. If only they could bottle springtime. (OK, I know, I'm slow, but it felt good to me).
Monday Feb 26 | ||

Conducting interviews. One candidate studied in Sweden. I didn't ask her if she orienteered.

| Note | ||
| Got in the car, and headed off to orienteering as it started to snow. The snow got heavier, cars started sliding off the I-95, it became clear that I wouldn't get to the start on time, and even if I did it would be a pain to get home with all the snow on the road. Had fun where I turned around, sliding across the road - like mud wrestling on wheels. So after 90 minutes in the car I found myself back home, with no run.
Thought about going for a run, but my natural sloth came to the fore. It was so much more comfortable to look out at the snow from my living room.
