Sprints. I didn't really like the first sprint - the area was too green, and the course setting lacked imagination. I also happened to overshoot #5, which of course can't be done in a sprint. The second was a better area for sprints. And I enjoyed pushing my speed boundary. Exhausted coming into the finish chute, which is a good sign. But I'd much rather spend 5.8 km doing a second middle distance race on a technical area than doing two sprints.

| Cincinnati for the weekend. Middle distance.
The good bits first. The course was well-set, and there were a couple of pretty technical patches. I had good flow going and was pushing the pace along. And I was navigating well through the tricky bits. The bad bits. I found a new way to make an error. The control descriptions were too long for my holder, so I folded over the first row, having memorized the first control number. I navigated spot on all the way to #3, looked at the third row down on the descriptions, and of course the numbers didn't match. Several minutes lost before I figured out what was going on. Feeling cheesed off, I gradually got going again over the next few controls. #10, #11, & #12 were three successive very short legs. So point and go from #10 to #11. That's funny, there's the control about 80 meters away and 2 contours lower than I expected. Oh well, it's the right number. Point and go to #12, an 80 meter leg. I cross the single reentrant, and nothing matches up. 10 minutes lost on #12, because #11 hadn't been hung in the right place. Nobody else lost anything like the same amount of time. So basically I did what I set out to do in my notes yesterday, but with perhaps 13minutes of errors on two very easy controls, I'm not very happy. For the first error, I need to get a new longer description holder. And as a failsafe, memorize two numbers ahead. Don't know what to do about the second. I am very bad at recovering from map or course-setting errors.

Normally I would ease off before a race, but this is the first week I am aiming for five hours training, and I'm not sure what times I'll take tomorrow and Saturday. So I wanted to keep the time up. A couple of thoughts before the middle distance tomorrow. I don't suppose it will be what I consider technical orienteering. But the Umstead meet showed that I can easily enough mess up on simple controls when I take them for granted. So, I'll aim to stay concentrated the whole way round the middle distance. I never really care about the sprints, and the long distance is still just a question of survival for me. Also, I should try to ignore any other orienteers (which is just part of concentrating the whole time). I got distracted a couple of times in Raleigh. Finally, I don't suppose I'll be feeling fresh, but I'd like to make a little effort to push the pace. Not full on, so there's nothing left, but faster than just my natural plod. If I can do those three things tomorrow, I'll be happy.

Feeling lethargic. But I came back in exactly the same time as ever. I am a HUMAN METRONOME. (Now, if I can just find the "Go Fast" button).

My PhD diploma arrived from France, 14 months after the diploma was signed and 27 months after I defended the dissertation. Not quite the same fanfare as an anglo-saxon graduation ceremony. Putting it on Attackpoint seems a suitably anti-climactic way to celebrate the moment. Something I absorbed from the doctorat was that the interesting general equilibrium problems can't be solved analytically. Too many variables, too many non-linear equations. The hardest academic assignments I ever faced were in my computer science days. The solution lies in breaking a big problem down into smaller parts, working on the bits that can be solved, and ignoring the really tricky bits. Left to its own devices, the subconscious usually finds the answer to the tricky bits. You wake up in the morning and you know the answer. A mix of analytics and alchemy. Well, orienteering isn't that complicated. It's nice to have something simple coming up for the weekend.

Saw a little bit of a documentary about the last Republican convention. One bloke was complaining that the Department of Homeland Security came knocking on his door at 5 am because he was a suspected anarchist. He had been projecting images opposing the war from his window on the building opposite, and on people, etc. What really bugged him was not the suggestion that he was an anarchist, which he denied, but that they disturbed his yoga session, his one moment in the day to be calm. I have a way to go before I can achieve zen running. Well, the mind will roam, but the body was in not too bad form.

My memory from 1997 of the Valley Forge map, 3 hours north, is that it wasn't too interesting. Ditto for the QOC meet 2 1/2 hours drive south. Decided I have done too much driving in the last few weeks. So I decided to stay at home, and get some things done. Nice day for a run. T-shirt and shorts for the first time this year. The distance felt fine, and knocked me out for a pleasant afternoon snooze.
