Getting a bit grumpy about the ongoing privatisation of the Domain. There seems always to be some part fenced off for a private function.
The Domain was fenced off for 16 days for a Midnight Oil concert. Lots of people would have enjoyed that, even if only for a few hours, but it's not clear why a proper rock venue wasn't used. Peter Garrett's a fine person, but why are public resources being used to make him richer?
Now there's a section of Mrs Macquarie's Chair fenced off for what seems to be a marketing promotion for Great Britain's innovation. I can't imagine that people will be talking about the fun they had at that event; and on the other hand, there are a bunch of regular park users who are inconvenienced.
I'm sure the trustees are merely responding to budgetary pressures. But I imagine in the long run, there'll be pressure to put up permanent seating because there's no point pulling seats down and re-erecting them every few days. I'd like proper cost-benefit analysis of the use of these public assets to be published.
Today was Malcolm Young's funeral, at St Mary's. Funny to think the driving force behind the second highest selling album in the world lived just around the corner.
