A full day of Elodie activities: swimming lesson; birthday party; dinner with Maisie + parents. Fell asleep putting her to sleep. Woke up at 11.30pm, enabling me to still get my daily run in.

A loop up to Callan Park, internally fulminating about a recent development at work. Finished in Mort Bay Park, where I saw a possum.

A busy day led to a late run. The pubs of Balmain were active, unsurprisingly on a Friday leading up to Christmas.

For reasons of my job I have learned that it is illegal to rollerblade in Centennial Park in a group of 16 or more people. I wonder how much distance there has to be between two people before they become parts of separate groups. And I am reminded of the hundreds of people who did rollerblade circuits of Toulouse and Paris on Friday nights back when I was living in France. I wonder if it still happens.

A busy day at work and an early departure for Elodie's preschool concert meant no time for a lunch run.

Elodie really enjoyed singing with her friends. The festivities afterwards revealed why so many of the children are such savages - their parents are no better, actively encouraging their kids to push in ahead of the kids who had been waiting in line for the jumping castle.

Went for a run at 10 pm. Looped around Callan Park, listened to the bats, got yelled at twice by hoons passing me in a ute, and saw a possum on the wall of the park as I was returning.

Saw another decent-sized lizard in the Botanic Gardens - thought this one might have been a frill-neck lizard, but it ran away before I got a proper look.

The clouds gathering over the city decided to dump on me just as I reached the first kilometre mark. Various people hung out under trees in the gardens, waiting for the storm to pass. The worst of it was gone in about 12 minutes, but I think they would have got soaked all the same. The cockatoos screeched, and the ibises took advantage of the missing people to spread across the lawns.

The one proper road I have to cross on this run is at a pedestrian crossing. A car slowed down, but I hesitated to pass the half-way mark of the crossing because it didn't seem to be stopping. The driver decided that she didn't need to stop, and carried on through the crossing while I was in the middle of the road. I gave the car a satisfyingly loud thump, which I hope shocked her.

A blue-tongue lizard did a haka near the Art Gallery kiosk. I don't think I've seen one since I was a little kid, when other kids found them near the creek at Holsworthy. Very surprised to see one in the Domain.

Yesterday my watch told me I would take 3 days to recover, and I mentally scoffed at it. But I was definitely feeling lethargic today, so I cut it back to 6 km instead of 7.

An unexpected side-effect of my running this year is that I have lost a little off my waistline. I first noticed with my shorts, but thought maybe they were a bit large to begin with, but now my suit pants are a bit loose.

We had a management session in the morning, which delayed my run. Felt surprisingly fresh, considering I ran 20km over the weekend. Maybe getting enough sleep makes s difference. Just a theory, mind.

Feeling a little worse for wear after a dinner party last night. Best sight was seeing the infinite care taken by the blokes to make sure the carafe and the aerator were clean, to deal with a 1992 Henschke that I had brought. Unfortunately the bottle belonged to a batch that I had not cellared properly, which had broken down, and was complete rubbish. It didn't stop the incantation of comments like 'tones of mulberry' by the blokes who were already too sozzled to tell what they were drinking.

Took Elodie to her first ballet concert. We had thought she might refuse to do anything, but she was very focused on getting all her steps right, and her voice stood out when they had to sing a song at the end. Hats off to the teachers who organised hundreds of little girls and one or two little boys to perform on the day. Wonderful.

Had to force myself out the door for the run, but I felt fine once I got going.
