Ate a banana before my run. Surprisingly quick by my standards.

Saw a possum walking along a power line toward someone’s roof.

Late night plod after a surprisingly tiring mini forecasting round. The pubs and restaurants of Darling Street were full of live music, all covers from the 70s and 80s. A woman walking with her friend gave me a high five as I ran. A bloke from a downmarket profile peed in the gutter while his girlfriend consulted her mobile phone.

Thinking about orienteering, New Zealand got me in the habit of just going straight; but recent events have shown I need to think a bit more about route choice. Straight will probably work in Denmark, from the snippets of maps I’ve seen.

Someone scheduled a meeting in my lunch break. So I had to run shorter and faster than I had wanted. Good to get my pace up a bit.

orienteering 41:59 [3] 4.5 km (9:20 / km) +90m 8:29 / km

Metro League, Mitchell Park.

No major difficulties, but rarely felt like I was doing everything smoothly.

On the way to 1, I thought about following the track around to the north, and then changed my mind and followed the ridge up. When I hit the track before the control, I started by going right, and then backtracked to find the track junction. Really, I had enough information to know that I was already heading straight for the control.

Not aware of being slow to 2, but Winsplits says I was, so maybe I was too tentative coming down the slope.

On the way to 5 I went left, and then right, and visited 10 before going to the control. I lost a bit of time on this leg. I guess the fastest route involved the track off to the left out of 4.

6 to 7 seemed to be many more contours up than mapped. Went off to the right and bounced off the track and back to 7.

On the way to 8, there was an unmapped rock on the top of the hill, pretty prominent. Again I ended up off to the right.

Took the track to 12. The splits suggest it was the best option.

I wasn't aware of any real mistakes, though a bit indirect to lots of controls. Quite a bit off the pace, all the same.

Bit of a jog after the race to get some more distance in.
