Krav Maga 2:45:00 [3]

Heavy bag, sparring, and KM classes. Not a good night for elbows, shins, and feet. Scraped a somewhat sizeable piece of skin off my elbow/forearm, badly bruised my shin, and broke a blood vessel on the top of my foot which made it puff up all weird. Apparently, this is normal stuff.

Bike (paved) 1:11:56 [3] 14.57 mi (12.2 mph) +998ft
shoes: MotoB Fly Team w/ stud tires

Ride around surrounding subdivision roads to finish studded tire break-in period. Rode w/ dilated pupils -- just got back from annual eye exam. 47 and I still have my 20/20 vision! Bam

Skating (ice) 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Graf Ultra G5

We'd had it w/ sub-par rental skates and since hockey is looking increasingly likely to be in our future, we took a trip to Play It Again Sports which is basically kids used hockey equipment mecca. We got quality skates for the kiddos for a song. And since I have high-school boy-sized feet, I got a pair myself. Super comfy and as far as I can tell, these retailed for $780 in 2011. I paid $29.99! Poor hubby struck out -- apparently there aren't a lot of kids wearing 12EE skates.

Anyway, the usual half-time-logged skating. Since I now have well-fitting, sharpened skates, I got a little more aggressive w/ the turns and hockey stops. So fun!!

"Open gym", i.e. do whatever. So I did an extended version of heavy bag class w/ all sorts of stations including battle ropes, agility drills (using the football ladder thingy), 20" box jumps, jump rope double unders, etc. interspersed w/ punching and kicking the bag. Pooped when done.

Santa brought me Suomi Extreme 294 tires for my ancient but much, much loved 26er. They're carbide studded tires from Finland (on super-duper clearance probably because nobody rides 26ers anymore). Recommended break-in is 30 miles on pavement to set the studs. Ride around surrounding subdivision roads. Handling is a little weird but not as noisy as I expected.

Skating (ice) 1:00:00 [2]

Skating w/ the fam @ Hardees Ice Plex. Gigantic place and big ice - nice. Hardly anyone there so lots of room to goof around. Logging half time.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3]
shoes: Hoka One One Kailua Trail

Set short farsta course and ran a bunch of laps around the corporate shelter area at Queeny waiting for my control pickup folks to return.

Some thoughts about this event:

- It was fun watching the competition unfold between the first and second laps. Newer SLOCers getting closer to older SLOCers!

- I was soooo glad I trusted my gut on the 3 controls I had a bad feeling about. I asked Bryan N. to check them and although 2 were right on, 1 was horribly misplaced. Not sure what I was thinking while setting!

- This was the 3rd O' event I put on this year (Babler, Queeny summer farsta and MTB O', and Queeny holiday farstas). I think that's an annual record for me since joining SLOC in 1995. Although no O' events are exactly easy to organize, it didn't feel too burdensome. I felt a lot of accomplishment, especially with going out of my comfort zone by trying a format (farsta) that I basically knew nothing about.

Busted my tail to set the entire long course before it got dark. Success! But there were a few controls that I wasn't completely certain were in the correct spots -- and no time to check again. Hoping to get someone to do that tomorrow while I'm setting the short course.

Completion of field checking at Queeny. Long course is shaping up. Starting to feel good about the design.

Field checking for Queeny farsta. Really intended to do this sooner than 3 days before the event, but I was just beaten down by long weeks. Wahhh.
