Note
Hey, I’m finally back...
Let's recap the past several months:
Mid-May: Major shake-up at work that resulted in me back to performing my old job…in addition to my current one. Slightly frightening (OK – a lot frightening), but an exciting challenge.
Late May: Tornado hits work resulting in significant damage to buildings (although could have been much worse) and significant additional tasks to get things stabilized.
June and July: Working very hard to adapt to new 60-70 hr/week schedule and NOT impact family time. Tough but doable! Besides the regular (long) workday, 3:30AM wakeups on weekdays so I can work before kiddos rise and several hours here and there on weekends are key. Trying to keep daily work crises in check. Addressing numerous personnel issues (always fun). Fitting in a few runs/rides here and there but not at a consistency that seems worthy of logging. It’s tough to find time for the active stuff and I long for next year when bike commuting will finally be possible. It’s just not currently practical – such is life in the multi-kid/multi-school, multi-full time job household. But truly, I feel that one can always find at least SOME time for life’s priorities. The main issue is that my mental energy is in super-short supply and I just can’t seem to drag myself out the door most evenings after kiddos are in bed.
Late July: Awesome vacation! We spend a week in Door County, WI in a lakeshore rental house with miles of undeveloped beach in both directions. We bring the bikes and hubby and I rip it up on the local MTB trails (Fun! It’s been a little while since we’ve ridden together) and take the kiddos out with the tagalong/trailer combo. I get in a memorable long run along the lakeshore – chilly rain the whole time, waves lapping at my feet, not a soul in sight, and just beautiful.
Late August: FINALLY starting to adjust and getting back into a regular training routine. Pheww. Still long work hours and a continuous string of issues/crises to address, but it seems much less mentally taxing. It’s sort of like a non-physical version of endurance training -- finally got my base miles in! And I am proud that I have managed to hold both jobs together…when in May I thought it was very possible that I might blow up and fail miserably in this role.
