Since we were childless for the day (thanks to my MIL), hubby and I headed off to LaBarque Creek Conservation Area (Jeff. County, just down the road from Young). He knows the area quite well and wanted to show me some of his glade restoration projects and little-known (and extremely cool) geologic features. There's only one small loop trail through the northern part of the area, the rest is undeveloped. So with USGS topo in hand, we headed off on a lovely afternoon trek. The prominent St. Peters sandstone makes for some interesting contour features, beautiful white sand along the creek beds, and even a few box canyons. Oohed and aahed at the huge drippy ice formations in the box canyons. Incredibly open woods -- would probably be decent any time of year. Lots of climb in some spots, not too bad in others. This area is 1,270 acres and adjoins Don Robinson State Park which is scheduled to open within 1-2 years and will be approx. 900 acres. So that's over 2,000 acres of public land with interesting, quality terrain (IMO) which is very close to the St. Louis metro area. Just sayin'! (this is directed at SLOCers).
Great O' practice on USGS topos today.
