Funk Bottoms Gravel:
"Ohio's toughest gravel grinder" did not disappoint. Wonderful mix of pristine, lush forest dirt roads/doubletrack and wide open farm roads w/ expansive views. Plus there were some adventure sections - a 1-2 mi. HAB on a rough slimy pot-holed ATV track that was probably rideable by someone (but not me) and a sketchy crossing of a high abandoned bridge. The climbing/descending was nearly continuous and the Niner w/ 38mm tires and recently serviced grabby hydraulic brakes was the perfect machine for me. I personally would not have been comfortable on my cross bike at all. I rode all the hills and was proud of that. I brought everything I needed and only had two 30-sec. stops. Wasn't really 'racing' but tried to put in a solid effort and ended up 3rd of 6 total ladies (100+ guys). Great event and course.
It turns out the RDs were on my high school cross country team (HS in Cleveland) and remembered my name so it was a reunion of sorts. I always felt our CC coach (who passed away several years ago) was highly motivational and inspired his runners to be the best they could - well, 30 yrs later, here are several of them still trying to kill it. Small world!!
Hiking w/ fam @ Brown's Lake Bog near Shreve. Nature Conservancy property -- sphagnum peat bog w/ pitcher plants growing on the peat mats. So cool!!! 83 yr old mom handled the hike w/ ease.
Annual Six Flags trip w/ fam, very sick hubby (was it the $10 pretzel @ SF??), chores/kiddo activities, FD party @ in-laws. Yikes, what happened to the weekend? Didn't plan my time well.Yay for trainers! Better than nothing.
