Note
Submitted my Wonderland Trail circuit application the morning of 3/31. Applications submitted between 3/15 and 4/1 are processed in random order starting 4/1. The NPS lottery system is a bit complex and I did a fair amount of research/hand wringing to strategize and hopefully give my application a higher probability of being accepted if/when it comes up during processing before all permit slots are taken. Last year, only about 20% of permits were accepted, so the odds aren't great. The hiking season for this trail is roughly late July through mid-September - not long. I researched less popular trail options (timeframe, hiking direction, start/end point, and specific campsite locations each night) and chose those! All of these details must be specified in your app and officially permitted. Hopefully being a solo hiker also gives me a little edge over a group. I did some soul-searching on how many days I could knock this out in without taking too many risks (and not hiking at night). Originally, I felt 3-4 was doable, but got nervous about being solo and the voluminous climb so ended up with 5 on my app. That's about 20 mi. per day. If I had been w/ another person, I would have been happy to throw caution to the wind, but being solo makes me more conservative.
So now it's wait and see. Should know something by late April/early May.
