Backcountry skiing (Alpine touring) 4:30:00 [1] 16.58 km (16:17 / km) +1940m 10:16 / km

Planned to go to the summit of Mt. Butters. Dropped down from the lodge about 500 metres to the creek, including launching big off a couple of wind lips just below the hut - man, did that wake you up! :)
Then a really pretty tour along the valley with the really pretty creek alongside you but the even more amazing glaciers in the background, descending from big peaks.
Next, a long climb up. One short boot pack along the way. Continued up but then decided to turn back when one slope didn't look good enough to put our large group onto.
Had a good, long (1200 metres total down this side?) run down below Ahab with several sections of good snow. Everyone was loving it and ripped down pretty hard and fast. Then onto a lower section where it seemed like we dialed it up even more and several of us had a blast jumping a wind lip back and forth several times.
Climbed back up to the lodge via a route that is marked with the 14 stations of the cross. When some people were getting tired, they thought they saw Jesus.
A few of us did one more run close to the lodge.

Backcountry skiing (Alpine touring) 4:30:00 [2] 13.6 km (19:51 / km) +1990m 11:28 / km

Over Schooner Pass and into Schooner Bowl. First run was a riotous run full of fun little mushrooms that offered something to hop off at every turn. Such fun!
The next run was more into the trees with plenty of drops that you could get some air off of. Had fun chasing Revy down sweet lines. One more time up and down through the trees, another fun one. Back up to the top of the pass for bus options home but most people opted for another half or full run down. Kind of nice to ski in smaller groups instead of our mega group of 14 plus guides. Our full run group was amazed at how fast we dropped the second half of the run (in just 6 minutes we dug a big vertical debt that could only be repaid with a lot of climbing back up). Carbon turned on the jets (I think she was itching to get a workout) and left all of us far behind, and even reached the top around the same time as a bunch of the half-run group. Then she lost her ski and made me feel useful ;).
A reeeeally fun bowl, good snow, fun challenging terrain with lots of fun rolls and drops. It was a good day to lock down the heels with the AT gear.

Backcountry skiing (Telemark) 4:00:00 [1] 14.1 km (17:01 / km) +1880m 10:13 / km

First day at Battle Abbey. Quite cold on the first climb. About 800 m descent down The King's Backside, south facing. Quite warm on the climb back up in bright sun. Then did two more short laps down the backside again, late in the afternoon.

This terrain has awesome potential for getting a lot of vertical easily, but most of the day felt fairly slow and also had several long breaks (I guess we're used to shorter breaks and more skiing). Felt a little teased about what could have been accomplished but still a decent day. The one long run was good, I would have loved another (or two) of that.
Amazing vistas, really big terrain, potentially loooong runs.

Out for about 7 hours 20 minutes.

Dirtbag Runners intervals

Met at the Valhalla Pure store and split into two groups: one went for a steady easier run by the river, the fast group (6 of us) went over to the road up to SilverTip golf course and did hill repeats:
5 x (30 sec up hard, 30 sec down easy)
2 min down
5 x (45 sec up hard, 45 sec down easy)
2 min down
5 x (1 min up hard, 1 min down easy)

By the third rep, I could already feel yesterday's workout. Felt quite tired at 30 seconds into each rep. Still had a good workout, felt good about it. Then ran back to the store where the manager and staff had laid out a spread of snacks and drinks, gave us discounts, and our local Salomon rep (Phil Villeneuve, also a run club member) gave out Salomon and Suunto buffs and bottle openers. A good time, good visiting, some people even drive from Calgary and back for these runs.

Strength (Sport Circuit) 45:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (35:00 @4)
shoes: Asics Gel DS Trainer (light bl

Decided to check out the Sport Circuit class at my gym at work. Haven't had this instructor before, Darrell. He came up to me before the warm up and gently said "you're dead". No, actually, first he looked me over, then paused, then said "you're dead". The fact that it felt like the look-over factored into his assessment made it worse, but I correctly figured he was just one of those tough-love instructors, so I took this as a positive interaction.

His classes are known to be the toughest, but today the class has worked up to their ultimate: "Meltdown". About 35 minutes through a sick set that can't be sustained for the entire time, so you either start cheating or you fail.
6 rolling stand-ups
12 push ups
12 jump-over squats
12 football step ups
12 squat press
6 single-legged burpees
repeat. We went through this 12 times. I probably only got through about 8-10 times - I definitely lost count.

Sooooo hard after the spin class last night. The various things in my training schedule just don't coordinate.

Biking (stationary bike) 15:00 [2]

Was going to do a long slow workout after the sport circuit session but didn't have much energy to do anything worthwhile, so I pulled the plug on this.

Strength 20:00 [3]

myotatic crunch with 10 lbs
cat vomit
front plank 90s
side planks 60s
