Backcountry skiing (Alpine touring) 5:00:00 [2] 18.0 km (16:40 / km) +1950m 10:49 / km

Colder today, the old orange softshell made an appearance again - much better for temperature regulation.

Down Wizard Gully, and up the other side by where we skied Oban previously. Skied down Talisker. At the bottom where you had a nice gentle slope but had to thread through a few bushes to finish, C-Bass, Atsuko and I all simultaneously commented that it reminded us of Norway where a couple of runs felt the same at the bottom - still good skiing if you were willing to thread through a few bushes/alders.
A few tight turns higher up where you really had to be able to place your turns exactly where you wanted.
Did another run down Wizard Gully, and the group was still up for one more down skier's left of Boulder Boogie. Lots of fun "boofing" off of pillows and drops.
A few of us finished with one last run down Wizard Gully #1 with some tight choke points that required you to point 'em straight and go for it. Had a fun hole-shot down a tight gully, and cranked a hard stop just before flying off a drop/cliff that would have been about a 15 foot or so ride.... would have been doable barely, maybe a little to exciting.... my brain kept toying with what it would have been like to try. I managed to stop hard about 1 foot before the edge but that almost popped the snow off and almost gave me a forced chance to find out if I could ski it or not.

A great couple of runs to wrap up the trip.

Backcountry skiing (Alpine touring) 5:00:00 [2] 17.0 km (17:39 / km) +1700m 11:46 / km

Did a run down the moraine and over to Shreddies Bowl. A tricky climb up through the trees, glad I brought someone to break trail for me ;)

Did a short run into Shreddies Bowl, open and cruisy alongside the trees.
Then over to the north side for a tree run. Had to pick our way through some serious alders lower down and did a solid double-heel-eject when I didn't succeed in jumping over a creek that I saw at the last second.

Wrapped around to go back up the same uptrack. Did the next run down the west side and it was more open, connected a couple of good patches of skiing, then had to dodge some holes/creek/alders lower down.

Back up to the lodge just before dark. A surprisingly big day (1700 metres) considering the uptracking was complicated and slower.

Backcountry skiing (Alpine touring) 4:30:00 [2] 14.5 km (18:37 / km) +1650m 11:52 / km

Started the day with a multiple burial scenario. The group did quite well, locating and digging out all 3 victims in a total of 7 minutes (5 min, 7 min, 7 min) including some deep burials.

Down skier's right side of Lee's trees, then up the other side into Cheap Scotch. The big open area at the top of Cheap Scotch looked intimidating but Revy assured us it was lower angle than it appeared. Once we were closer, you could see what he meant. Headed up to Swiss Col where the wind was surprisingly calm. The open run below skied nicely and had enough pitch to do nice turns. Did a second lap of this from the bench below the col. Followed Oban to the bottom and climbed back up toward the cabin. A few of us snuck in one more run down Lee's Trees, Revy found a nice steep entrance for us.

Backcountry skiing (Telemark) 2:00:00 [2] 7.0 km (17:09 / km) +650m 11:42 / km

New Years ski trip to Sorcerer Lodge with Revy/C-Bass, Atsuko, Brook/Andrea, Russ/Vikki, Stuart/Eiri, and Adam.

Flew in today, so not a big day. That said, flying in with just two flights in the big 212 helicopter made it quite efficient and we are at the lodge quite early.

This was the first lodge I ever flew in to, back in January 2004 when I was still pretty new to telemark skiing. On that trip, the terrain and snow were just too much for me, so I ended up doing parallel turns on my telemark gear for most of the week. This time, I started on telemark gear and hoped that my ability would be stronger. On the first lap, the deep snow combined with lumpy terrain (not all of the dips and pillows are filled in or smoothed over yet, some probably never do) made it challenging for telemarking, yet I knew it could be fun on AT so I took advantage of the chance to switch when we swung by the lodge after our first lap. Unfortunately, the reason we were swinging by the lodge is because Vikki forgot part of the bindings for her snowboard so her only option was to borrow skis (fortunately she had hard boots with tech fittings, so this was possible). She has never skied, and these were not the conditions to learn. She dabbled in a little bit of skiing for the rest of the trip but didn't join the group much :(
