Up the Sunshine ski out with Peter and his friend Tate who was the daughter of the head of Norquay ski patrol growing up. Some fun stories there, including her having a crush on her dad’s staff member Marty Schaffer when she was 12 and he was 18.
Light melting snowfall at the parking lot which quickly became real snow as we climbed. Higher up it was snowing harder and blowing in our faces. Lots of friendly good mornings from skiers and staff going the other way, and the classic “you’re going the wrong way” jokes. Climbed up to the top of Wawa chair and poked our noses out of bounds. We had been thinking of skiing Twin Cairns, a pretty mellow objective, but visibility wasn’t great so we decided to not bother. Not a big upset, we all knew today might not amount to much and we were all only expecting to get out for a walk on the skis.
Ripped the skins, skied down the Wawa run on skier’s left that we had climbed up, and down the Canyon Trails that parallel the ski out. A few cms of new snow had accumulated and was pretty creamy, not too heavy, but wasn’t sticking to the hardpacked surface underneath and would shear out if you tried to carve hard against it. Still had a good run down, and got to lay down a bunch of tele turns.
