Level 1 Professional Mountain Biking Instructor course, Day 1 of 3.

Morning: EKG, Odyssey loop with lots of stops, cut out after Long Road to Ruin to get back to the stadium for lunch.
Afternoon: EKG East to Laundry Chutes. Forgot that lower Laundry Chutes has a tricky spot. Then Eyedropper but it felt easy compared to the crux of Laundry Chutes.

Biking (Bikepacking) 1:45:00 [1] 34.0 km (3:05 / km) +150m 3:01 / km
shoes: Instinct (2020 Feb overhaul)

The final ride down Gray Creek FSR to the car. It warmed up nicely by the time we started; we had been dreading how cold the descent might be. Stopped for lunch before the end of the ride so that we could enjoy a little more time on our own. We didn’t see anyone for most of the trip, especially the first two days, and it was really nice. When we got to the car, we enjoyed a nice cold wash up in St. Mary River.

We absolutely loved this adventure. Camping in the middle of nowhere, enjoying pedalling our bikes with all our self-sufficient gear on-board (the bags carried nicely and the bikes pedalled well), and especially trying to find a way through to make a loop out of this route.
I remember when Revy got all geared up for bikepacking. I thought about it but the bags seemed expensive and then the thought of another bike seemed overwhelming. We are loving our bags and so far our full suspension mountain bikes seem to be working really well for the kind of trails that appeal to us the most. Now we just want to do more rides! Lots of good ideas in mind, and can’t wait for when it is safe to travel even further for additional riding destinations.

Generally easy nav down the FSRs to Crawford Bay with just a bit of uncertainty re: which bridges were missing based on our map and decommissioned roads. It all worked out despite the map thinking a bridge or two weren’t there. Stopped at a great food truck bakery for great sandwiches and cinnamon buns. Carbon hauled two more huge buns for the rest of the day. Pretty views as we rode along the water of Crawford Bay. Tempting to stop at a beach but we were excited about our adventure.
Up Gray Creek Pass on the significant gravel FSR that felt so much simpler than yesterday’s search. People passing us in trucks were impressed that we were riding all the way up and over but we really felt this was easy compared to yesterday’s push. The locals were really courteous, slowing to a crawl as they passed so they wouldn’t dust us out. A warm day, we stopped a couple of times to filter more water from the creeks en route. When we got to the rec site at Oliver Lake near the top, a big group was there to camp for a birthday party so we continued on to find a spot on our own. Hit the top of Gray Pass, took a selfie, continued down the other side. Not many flat spots that weren’t on the shoulder of the road. Finally found a flat spot in the bush with a creek nearby at almost 1900 metres elevation. Wore everything while sleeping that night and was juuuust warm enough. The two big cinnamon buns helped fuel our fires.
