Adventure Race race 6:33:00 [3]

LaPine Loop AR with CJ: Started off with a short O-course on foot followed by a bit longer trekking session. We got all of the optional O-points and chose to skip one of the trekking PRO points. We picked up two other PRO points on the trekking session and the all women's pro team passed us on the way to the first PRO point. No mistakes on the Nav and we arrived at the boats in about 1.5hrs. We inflated the packrafts and hit the cold shallow river. Ice was forming on the banks of the river and on our clothes, packrafts, paddles, etc. The temp was in the 20's. We hit the first checkpoint and CJ got her climbing harness on and headed to the ropes while I paddled down to meet her under the bridge. She did the quick rappel and then we got situated for more of the paddle. I decided to get my wetsuit on because I could not stay warm and added more air to CJ's raft. The next paddle CP was the famous mud bog where the flag was set up on a log tee-pee right in the middle of the muck. When I arrived there was some teams wallowing in the muck trying to punch. I found a log/branch that I grabbed and used it to get to the flag and back easier. I still sunk in to my waist but I didn't waste too much time. We continued on the long slow paddle and finally made the takeout. We skipped the final PRO paddle CP. We deflated our boats and packed everything up. The all women's pro team caught back up to us here at the takeout. We started on the trek to get two CPs carying all of our paddle gear after about 3:45 of racing. This was the low point, carrying the cold wet muddy boat gear all the way back to the bike TA. I made a nav error on our final CP right before the TA that added some extra mileage and around 20min. We dropped all of our paddle gear and found out that they extended the course time by 30min so that gave me some confidance that we could finish in time. We stared the bike leg after about 5hrs of racing. The first several points on the bike leg went smoothly and we made it up to the bike-O TA quickly. We chose to skip all of the optional Bike-O due to time. The next CP was the waterfall of ice and CJ and I got our wetsuits on and got in the water and climbed the waterfall to get a key from the chest. We got out and grabbed our bikes and waded across the river to change into some dryish clothes for the final bike leg to the finish. There were two more mandatory CPs on this leg. I got the first one easily, but got on an un-mapped trail on our way to our final mandatory CP and lost around 10min searching for it. We did find it and then booked back to the finish right around 6:33. I think we were within the 5min OT grace period.

Overall, tough but fun race. With warmer temps it would have been a very fun race. It was fun to take part in an AR again. It's been a long time. I think we finished 13th overall out of 50 teams. In hindsight, we may have been able to pick up 1-3 more PRO CPs on the bike leg without the two nav errors. We still would have skipped the Bike-O course.
