Orienteering race (Oughaval) 1:12:51 [3] 8.75 km (8:19 / km) +316m 7:03 / km

Sloppy navigation and dropped time throughout course. At end felt I'd dropped about 10 minutes but perhaps not as much. Legs tired after yesterday and the hills during 2nd half were a struggle but as I type this on Sun evening, I'm much happier about my legs than this time yesterday.

Longish leg to one to get the brain working. Went via 8, dropped down hill to track. Missed path going up to left, but realised and entered wood. Reached boulders beyond control. reckoned I had passed it on right and came back and found it. About 1 min dropped.

For #2, got back to track, past turning circle. climbed too early, then probably passed above it. got to track above and then descended and missed it again and found depression beside lower track. Climbed and got control. 2 minutes

#3 & #4 ok, slight hesitations.

#5 Left track after wall, cut through wall and then went too low. Had to climb and come back to get control. 30 seconds.

#6 Hesitation, pulling up short and too low. Another 30 seconds.

#7 & #8 grand

#9 after map exchange, a longer leg. Plan to take path and wall to wall corner and contour around. Didn't read paths properly and ended on track too high. Descended to correct path and then with the digits of 14 obscuring the detail, didn't read that the path is a wall and that it doesn't meet path in any case. Once I was heading downhill I put the brakes and realised the issue. Got back to wall and then because of vegetation lost contact with wall and ended up too high in the stony ground. Descended back down to wall and got got to control cleanly. At least another 30 seconds, probably more.

#10 compass down but hesitation. Probably should have picked up on rock detail en route and trust compass. 30 seconds

#11 a little hesitant.

#12 struggled on climb.

#13 lots more climb to struggle on and then a little off entering circle but corrected fairly quickly. 20 seconds but could have lost a lot more.

#14 Descended early but didn't adjust and was looking for control about 100m too soon. I'd say close to a minute dropped.

#15 Looked for veg change to east of control but no sign of it. Zoe informed me that its stones! Messed around and turned back when too near to path to north. Approx 30 seconds.

#16 Almost ran past contro land was expecting it to be just below 2nd path. Just the lines on map made it look like that to my blurred sight. Emergency stop as I passed by kite one metre away.

#17 Thought brambles to large re-entrant.

#18 contour around to #8, dropped off path but was slightly south. Could certainly have managed this faster.

#19 & #20 grand. Contour around and through holly.

#21 down to track and along to where wall meets it. Drop down and slightly round about route to punch.

#22 Climbed up to path with a wall. This confused me as I could not see detail on map. Messed about but went in where I saw footprint coming out and found kite. 20 seconds

#23 climb up and long path a bit.

#24 Had seen this control when looking for #2, so dropped to path and then climbed when I saw control.

#25 straight but oh so tired. Past Joe Lalor who also did Maulin and we agreed that doing both was too much!

#steady into finish.

Now to tot up.....
7 minutes dropped.

Good area, plenty deciduous wood and enjoyed it. Usually I'm strong in this terrain.

Very tough course. 300m climb during first 2k. Feeling a little sorry I did it as I don't think it'll benefit me, but I may think differently tomorrow if my legs have mostly recovered.
Wore ankle braces and felt I was dragging anchors particularly on the faster sections. They do guarantee I get ankles to finish in one piece though. I wore them once before many years ago and now remember why I didn't wear them again.

Ran back up the course to Zoe. Unfortunately part of the course was incorrectly marking which diverted many runners and she and many others did an extra 2k. I ignored those markers as I knew where the course should go but was in doubt till I picked up next marker.
