My first road race in excess of 5k...not in a mad rush to do another! With not going to JK there was a gap in calendar and I decided to run for club in Leinster 10 mile, 2 twisty laps of St. Anne's. What I hadn't factored was how much the Leinster Champs would have taken out of me and I'm quite sure I carried quite a bit of fatigue into race, so much that I contemplated not running.
None the less I feel I'm in shape to do 62 minutes comfortably, so had ballpark 3.50/km pace in mind. I ran steady from gun and said 'perfect' to myself when first km clicked by in 3.48. So was happy to continue at that pace. Mile markers were not accurate, first one was at 6.50, should have been 6.10.
3.51, 3.51, 3.48 were the next 3 km, but I already had feeling of tiredness in legs during the uphill 5km which was 4.04. The leading lady group had caught up with me and I tried to stay with her for a while but had to let them go. I noticed how heavy everyone around me was breathing yet my breathing was very comfortable, just legs not responding. 6, 7 & 8 km were 3.53, 3.58 & 3.50 and I passed 5 mile in 31.02, bang on target but already knew it was going to be substantial positive split. I was also concious of niggle in top of right thigh, and thought about dropping out, but I soldered on.
10k passed in about 39 minutes, and I didn't break 4min/k thereafter till last km. I stayed with 2nd lady for a while, but had to let her go as well.
So the rest of the km splits from 9 onwards, 3.58, 4.01, 4.04, 4.12, 4.07, 4.07, 4.01 & final km 3.50.
Clearly I would have been sorry not to do it. I'm not a bit surprised how it unfolded, but I do need race free legs. My 4th race in 23 days, 2 of which (Wicklow Way trail & Leinster O Champs) took a lot out of me.
The good news is that despite the twinge in my right thigh/hip, I seem to be 100% now, so I can get some recovery in legs for IOC.

Really struggled to put one leg in front of other.
