Orienteering race (Middle Chams) 37:13 [4] 5.4 km (6:54 / km) +10m 6:50 / km

Finally prompted by son to sign up following the highs & lows of British Middle sprint today.
Started too fast (not uncommon). I knew the area was bland and precision was needed, but too much adrenalin as the clock beeped. Should have been more cautious and made sure I got into the map.
Common blip after 7. Hit track and did not use compass to check which one. Keep telling myself to make sure in these circumstances and keep not doing so in the heat of competition.
After 12 deliberately took a longer path route as I felt ir would be safer and quicker - and it was. Up to 3rd at this point and flying.
Next leg seemed easier, and that is where I make most of my mistakes. I had a plan but feeling cocky after previous leg and thinking it was easy I failed to focus on how far along the path I was. Turned off where I thought I should (and was in right place) but then "woke up" in bland woods and realised I did not know exactly where I was. Should have spent a few seconds making sure, but rushed decision making, decided I had overshot and so turned back when in fact I was about 50m short. "Headless chicken" rushing about lost me 3.5 - 4 mins and dropped me from 3rd to 16th. Lesson - stay focussed even on the "easier" bits. If uncertain, don't panic and work things out properly. I keep saying this and keep failing to put it into practice. How can I / when will I learn the lesson?
