Orienteering race (Trail Challenge) 45:07 [4] ** 10 km (4:31 / km)

SLOW 10K Trail Challenge in Richmond Park. Absolutely loads of people turned up - more than a hundred, including quite a few people with BPTT T-shirts. Weather was changeable, with a rain shower early on - quite pleasant actually - and quite cool for August.

Actual distance run was 10.4km. Ran well, and good navigation apart from a poor route from 4-5 which cost me 60 seconds. Nick B won in around 39 minutes, second place was 41 minutes.

The race was a mass start and a lot of people ran off hard at the start. Quite quickly I got away from the pack, as they took a different, straighter route to the first control, but I went fast to lose them.

I ran hard for the last few controls to stay ahead of someone else, and certainly could have run harder for the whole race - I didn't feel tired at all at the finish and had lots of energy left, although my knees hurt from the steep, tussocky decent right at the end. I think that the week's orienteering in France has improved my base level of fitness quite a bit.

Fast cycle back from Putney, via Vauxhall, with a tail wind helping.
