Orienteering race (Urban Race) 57:34 [4] *** 8.44 km (6:49 / km)
31c shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11 AW11

HAMOK Bruges City Race. Lovely to be running a full-length urban race that was consistently in the historic part of town. Relatively easy technically but with quite a few legs where you did need to plan ahead, including a very long leg early on. I took a nasty slip early on, on a metal drain-cover, while going around a corner of a church (it was raining) and whacked my left shin, right wrist and left forearm. The wrist in particular has a lovely big shiner now. I was a bit dazed after this fall, and spent maybe 30 second getting myself together before continuing on the race. Also took a couple of bad route choice (one was to lose someone) which maybe cost me around a minute in total, but I think just the (lack of) running speed is what left me four minutes down on Dan and 13 minutes down on the winner (a Belgian international).

Orienteering (Sprint Race) 16:10 [4] ** 3.41 km (4:44 / km)
23c

HAMOK sprint race at Veltembosje. Distance includes a 300m timed out section. A short, easy sprint in two sections - through a small white woodland, and then around a barracks. No major mistakes although didn't go in straight lines enough...

Orienteering 21:05 [4] *** 2.95 km (7:09 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11 AW11

HAMOK sprint race, Ter Groene Poorte. A more interesting sprint than the morning's and quite a bit more technical. Some interesting control locations - a couple requiring a scramble down some disintegrating stairs. Dan still got me, but only by a minute.

Easy loop to Essex Wharf and back, with Owen. No sign of any herons, woodpeckers or ring-necked parakeets but plenty of swans and Canada geese (shouldn't they have emigrated to Canada by now?) as usual.

Orienteering race (Park Race) 26:39 [5] **** 3.5 km (7:37 / km)
26c

SLOW Imperial College race. Wow, this was great! What a cracker! Technical and high-speed on a 1:3000 map. A real mix of gardens, university alleys and grand roads. Poor start, misreading the map, and then made a big mistake early on (1m15) from 5-6 by not working out the levels or spotting stair-cases. Spent much of the race interchanging position with Tom C, Vince and Helen, generally each of us swapping running order as I made mistakes (but I was generally a little faster on the straight). I finally pulled away from them at the end which was a little easier technically, thankfully.

Annoyingly, Scott finished 2 seconds front of me and Angus 3 seconds in front - but I was a second in front of Angus as the final control! I didn't think I did the last leg that slowly...

Anyway, a better race than on Thursday (it wasn't quite so hot) but still room to improve. Not sure how many of the other races in the series will be as technical as this one, the physical/technical differences between each race in the series are mixing up the results.

GPS said 6.2km run although I doubt this greatly. I don't think it liked the tall buildings.
