I ran the hard 7, 5 minutes behind the winner. Winsplits correctly identified my one error going to #7 where I decided to change my route choice technique and took a wrong route choice through the woods and a marsh instead of along a clearing, my thinking at the time was that if I went that way it would kinda like a dog leg and it would be fast because i already know which way to go, I was wrong and to emerge from the vegetation i had to wade through lots of under brush that slowed me down to almost a walk. By the time I had emmerged the 3 people i had passed the previous control were all ahead of me. Lost about a minute.
Overall the race went quite well the begining was really good and got used to the terrain very quickly. Started out at a pace that I thought I could maintain but as I hit # 9 my energy was zapped, my pace slowed down and I found it really hard to keep running, especially up the hills. Looking at the splits you can see this, I start in 1st position and maintain it until # 5 where i drop down to 2nd. Then all of a sudden at # 10 i go down to 3rd and my splits start placing 7th and 8th whereas at the begining I was averaging 5th in split times.
So lessons learned: don't change my way of choosing my route, if the clearings are fastest, don't change it up just to check if this is the case.
Also my splits averaged about 5th or 6th place which means the reason I did well was errors made by everyone else and my running speed is slowing me down. And I know I can navigate at a higher running pace because I proved that in the first part of the course. I have really stepped up my training since last year but i dont really feel that I have gotten any faster, I guess today might be a result of the past week of inactivity and giving blood so I shouldnt really base everything on today. And this was only the first race of the season so I shouldnt be too hard on myself.
