Well that didn't go quite to plan! Was trundling around the usual area, with a small addition to the east and coming back over the hill towards Karragullen townsite when a stick flicked up into the gears.
Stopped to extract it and thought - that's odd - there's no chain running from the pedals back to the rear derailleur. Sure enough, the stick had broken the chain at the joining link and I wasn't carrying the spare (at home in the back of the car!). Fortunately, I was at one of the higher points around and was able to roll to Brookton Hwy, walk up to the Chevin Rd T/O and then roll back home. Could have been much more tedious. Wasn't the pleasant ride that the beautiful morning deserved.

Orienteering race (Xmas Novelty Event) 51:52 [1] 3.22 km (16:08 / km) +12m 15:50 / km
shoes: Merrell Continuum

A fun event at Piney Lakes - teamed with Sue and Timber to clean out most of the dog permissible controls. Nice work by Michael Dufty, setting a course with lots of controls and no map to start with. Bits of map at each control helped a lot once the old map memory skills kicked in. Timber got very excited at the start - I think he thought it was a Parkrun and he would have a good gallop but it was very sedate and he calmed down quickly. Very enjoyable morning.

Two weeks out of the saddle and a warm morning made that feel like very hard work. Took a diversion to see if I could go further north towards Victoria Reservoir before heading east but no - threatening signs including mention of cameras turned me back, although there was no sign of a vehicle turnaround. Passed a small snake sunning itself on the track by the creek - didn't seem very interested as I shot past, missing its tail by a couple tyre widths. Otherwise, an uneventful slog for most of the journey.
